Who the Fathers are
The “Church Fathers” are the influential Christian teachers of roughly the first eight centuries — our earliest witnesses to how the apostolic faith was understood, taught, and defended. They are not infallible, but they are early, and they are checkable.
Organized into three eras (free preview)
- Apostolic Fathers (c. 90–150): Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Polycarp, the Didache
- Ante-Nicene Fathers (c. 150–325): Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen
- Nicene & Post-Nicene Fathers (c. 325–500): Athanasius, the Cappadocians, Chrysostom, Augustine
