Small Compline (Greek usage)

As prayed in the Greek usage

22 min24 prayers

The short service of prayer before sleep (Little Compline, in Greek the Mikron Apodeipnon) as it is prayed in the Greek usage, from a Greek-English book of 1919 prepared for the Greek Orthodox church in London: Psalms 50, 69 and 142, the Doxology, the Creed and prayers for a quiet night. The Slavonic (Russian-usage) Small Compline has the same three psalms, the Doxology and the Creed, but differs in its hymns and closing prayers; it is not the form given here.

A layperson prays this as a reader's service: the priest's blessings and exclamations are left out and "Through the prayers of our holy fathers..." is said in their place. The dismissal hymn (troparion) of the day changes with the day and is not printed here. The 1919 book arranges Little Compline for the Fridays of the Great Fast, when the Akathist Hymn is sung within it; the Akathist Hymn, the Canon and the litany are not included here. The opening and repeated Trisagion prayers are given in Hapgood's 1906 wording (see the sources).

Opening

A layperson says these words in place of the priest's "Blessed be our God always".

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, have mercy upon us, O Lord Jesus Christ our God. Amen.

Glory to Thee, O our God, glory to Thee.

O Heavenly King and Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere present, and fillest all things, the Treasury of all blessings and Giver of Life, come and dwell in us, purify us from every stain, and of Thy Goodness save our souls.

Trisagion

Thrice.

O Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal One, have mercy upon us.

The priest's closing exclamation after the Our Father ("For thine is the kingdom...") is left out in a reader's service.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O all-holy Trinity, have mercy upon us. O Lord, wash away our sins. O Master, pardon our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for thy Name's sake.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from the Evil One.

Twelve times.

Lord, have mercy.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; both now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

O come, let us worship and bow down to God, our King. O come, let us worship and bow down to Christ, our King and God. O come, let us worship and bow down to Christ Himself, our King and God.

Psalm 50 (51)

Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness: according to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offences. Wash me throughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness, and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me. O give me the comfort of thy help again, and stablish me with thy free spirit. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked, and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall shew thy praise. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee: but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion, build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations. Then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine altar.

Psalm 69 (70)

Haste thee, O God, to deliver me: make haste to help me, O Lord. Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul. Let them be turned backward and put to confusion that wish me evil. Let them be turned backward and soon brought to shame that cry over me, There, there. But let all those that seek thee be joyful and glad in thee, O God, And let all such as delight in thy salvation say alway, The Lord be praised. As for me, I am poor and in misery: haste thee unto me, O God. Thou art my helper, and my redeemer: O Lord, make no long tarrying.

Psalm 142 (143)

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and consider my desire: hearken unto me for thy truth and righteousness' sake. And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground. He hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit vexed within me, and my heart within me is desolate. Yet do I remember the time past, I muse upon all thy works: yea, I exercise myself in the works of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul gaspeth unto thee as a thirsty land. Hear me, O Lord, and that soon, for my spirit waxeth faint. Hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. O let me hear thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning, for in thee is my trust. Shew thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto thee. Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies; for I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee, for thou art my God. Let thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness. Quicken me, O Lord, for thy Name's sake. And for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble, and of thy goodness slay mine enemies, and destroy all them that vex my soul, for I am thy servant.

Doxology

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty; O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; and Holy Ghost. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world; have mercy upon us, Thou that takest away the sins of the world. Receive our prayer, Thou that sittest on the right hand of the Father, and have mercy upon us. For Thou only art Holy, Thou only art Lord, Jesus Christ, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Night by night we bless Thee, and we praise Thy name to all Ages and for ever and ever. Lord, Thou hast been our refuge from one generation to another. I said: Lord, have mercy upon me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against Thee. Lord, to Thee have I fled; teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God. For with Thee is the well of life, and in Thy light shall we see light. O continue forth Thy loving-kindness unto them that know Thee. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this night without sin. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and Thy name is praised and glorified from all Ages. Amen. O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in Thee. Blessed art Thou, O Lord: teach me Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Master: grant me understanding of Thy statutes. Blessed art Thou, O Holy One: enlighten me by Thy statutes. Thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: despise not then the works of Thine own hands. To Thee belongeth praise, to Thee belongeth worship, to Thee glory belongeth, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all Ages. Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from Heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made Man. And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures. And ascended into Heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets. In One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. I look for Resurrection of the dead, And the life of the Ages to come. Amen.

It is very meet

It is very meet to bless thee, the Ever-blessed and most Pure Virgin and Mother of our God. Thou art more honourable than the Cherubim and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim; thou, without spot of sin, didst bear God the Word: and thee, verily the Mother of God, we magnify.

Kontakion

The 1919 book, arranged for the Fridays of the Great Fast, places this kontakion of the Mother of God here, before the Trisagion. At other times of the year the hymns appointed for the day are read after the Our Father instead.

To thee, the Champion Leader, do I, thy City, ascribe thank-offerings of victory, for thou, O Mother of God, hast delivered me from terrors; but as thou hast invincible power, do thou free me from every kind of danger, so that to thee I may cry: Hail, thou Bride unwedded.

Trisagion

Thrice. (The Trisagion prayers are said again, then the troparion of the day.)

Here the dismissal hymn (troparion) of the day is read. Then, forty times:

Lord, have mercy.

Prayer

O Christ, our God, Who at all seasons and in every hour, in heaven and on earth, art worshipped and glorified; Who art long-suffering, compassionate, and merciful; Who lovest the just and shewest mercy upon the sinners; Who callest all to Salvation through the promise of future blessings; do Thou, O Lord, in this hour, receive our petitions, and order our lives according to Thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, hallow our bodies, correct our thoughts, purify our minds, and deliver us from all tribulation, evil, and distress. Encircle us with Thy holy angels, that, guarded and guided by their defence, we may attain to the unity of the Faith, and to the full knowledge of Thine unapproachable glory, for Thou art blessed from all Ages to all Ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

The book abbreviates the "Glory"; it is given here in full. After the hymn the reader asks the priest's blessing; in a reader's service the priest's "May God be gracious unto us..." is replaced by "Through the prayers of our holy fathers...", as below.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; both now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

Thou art more honourable than the Cherubim and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim; thou, without spot of sin, didst bear God, the Word; and thee, verily the Mother of God, we magnify.

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, have mercy upon us, O Lord Jesus Christ our God. Amen.

Prayer to the Mother of God

O Lady, Bride of God, spotless, undefiled, incorruptible, most chaste and pure Virgin, who by thy wondrous conceiving hast united God, the Word, to man, and joined the fallen nature of our race to heavenly things; the only hope of the hopeless, and the succour of those who fight; the ready help of those who flee, and the refuge of all Christians; spurn not me an accursed sinner, though I have rendered myself altogether useless by my shameful thoughts, words, and deeds, and through indolence have become a slave to the pleasures of life; but as the Mother of the merciful God, mercifully have compassion upon me a sinner and a prodigal, and receive my prayer, though it be offered unto thee by unhallowed lips; and using thy boldness as a mother, entreat thy Son and our Lord and Master that He may extend to me His goodness and mercy, so as to overlook my numberless transgressions, and turn me to repentance, and show me forth as a zealous doer of His commandments. And be thou ever near me for that thou art merciful, compassionate, and gentle; in this present life an ardent help and protection, defending me from the assaults of adversaries and leading me to salvation; and in the hour of my passing hence care for my miserable soul and drive far from it the dark visions of evil spirits; and in the awful Day of Judgment, deliver me from eternal punishment, and present me as an inheritor of the ineffable glory of thy Son and our God. May this be my lot, O Lady, all-holy Mother of God, through thy mediation and help, by the grace and mercy of thine only-begotten Son, our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ; to Whom belong all glory, honour, and worship, with His eternal Father, and His all-holy, righteous, and life-giving Spirit, now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

Another prayer, to our Lord Jesus Christ

And grant to us, O Master, when we depart for sleep, rest for body and soul; and protect us from the murky sleep of sin and from all dark pleasures of the night. Calm the impulses of passion, and quench the fiery darts of evil, which are treacherously cast against us; check the turbulence of our flesh and lull all our earthy and mundane thoughts. And grant to us, O God, a watchful mind, a prudent reason, a vigilant heart, and sleep tranquil and free from all evil imaginings. And raise us up at the hour of prayer strengthened in Thy commandments and holding the remembrance of Thy judgments unshaken within us. Grant unto us Thy glorification through the night, that we may praise and bless and glorify Thine all-honoured and sublime Name, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

Most glorious, ever-virgin, blessed Mother of God, present our prayer to thy Son and our God, and plead with Him, that through thee He may save our souls.

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Ghost. O Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

In thee, O Mother of God, all my hope I set; guard me under thy protection.

The book gives the first line to the priest; at home it is said by the one praying.

Glory to Thee, O God our hope, glory to Thee.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; both now, and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

In a reader's service the priest's dismissal ("May Christ, our true God...") is replaced by these words.

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, have mercy upon us, O Lord Jesus Christ our God. Amen.
