Evening Prayers: Examination of Conscience
“Prove me, O God, and know my heart; examine me, and know my paths; and see if there is any way of iniquity in me, and lead me in an everlasting way.”Psalm 138:23-24 (139:23-24)
Reflection
Looking back over the day with God is an ancient practice, kept in the Church's evening prayers, which include a short confession of the day's sins before sleep. Notice where you saw grace and gave thanks; notice where you stumbled and ask for mercy. Nothing is hidden from Him, so nothing needs to be hidden by you. What weighs on you can also be brought to confession.
A prayer
Lord, I bring You the whole day — its small kindnesses and its failures. Thank You for the moments I almost missed. Forgive me where I was unloving, anxious, or proud. Wash the day clean, and let me sleep as one already forgiven. Amen.
Carry this with you
Name one grace you received today and one thing you would do differently.
