Day 9 · The Fruit of the Spirit
Self-Control
“For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.”2 Timothy 1:7
Reflection
Self-control is the fruit that guards all the others — the steady governing of our desires, words, and impulses. Notice Paul calls it a gift of God's Spirit, not mere willpower. We are not left to white-knuckle our way to maturity; the Spirit who lives in us supplies the power. Self-control is freedom — no longer ruled by every craving or reaction, but able to choose the good.
A prayer
Father, thank You that self-control is not something I must produce alone, but a gift of Your Spirit. Where my desires, words, or reactions rule me, take the throne. Give me the power to say no to what harms and yes to what is good. Free me from being driven by every impulse, and grow in me the steady self-mastery that reflects Jesus. Amen.
Carry this with you
What is one area where you most need the Spirit's gift of self-control, and will you ask for it?
