Lent: A Return to God

Day 1 · Lent: A Return to God

The Long Way Home

“"Yet even now," says Yahweh, "turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning." Tear your heart and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.”Joel 2:12-13

Reflection

Lent begins not with a tally of our failures but with an invitation: return. The prophet asks us to tear our hearts rather than our clothing, because God is after something far deeper than an outward show of sorrow. Repentance, at its simplest, is turning around and walking back toward the One who has been waiting for us all along.

A prayer

Gracious and merciful God, I hear you calling me home, and I want to come. Gather up the scattered pieces of my heart and turn them gently back toward you. Where I have wandered, lead me; where I am ashamed, remind me that you are slow to anger and rich in love. Teach me to begin this season not in fear but in trust. Amen.

Carry this with you

What part of my life feels farthest from God right now, and what would one small step toward home look like today?
