The Nativity Fast

Day 10 · The Nativity Fast

A House for David

“When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”2 Samuel 7:12-13

Reflection

King David wanted to build God a house. God answered that he would build David a house instead, a royal line, and that one of David's descendants would reign forever. David's kingdom later split, fell, and went into exile, and for centuries no king sat on David's throne. Then the angel told Mary that her son would receive “the throne of his father David” and that his Kingdom would have no end (Luke 1:32-33). God's promises can look broken for a very long time and still be kept.

A prayer

Faithful God, you promised David a kingdom without end, and you kept your word in Jesus Christ. When your promises in my life seem broken, help me to wait in hope. Build your house in me, and make me a living stone in your Church. Amen.

Carry this with you

Is there a promise of God you have stopped believing? Bring it back to him in prayer.
