This is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for design in modern science — and most of it comes from physicists who are not trying to defend Christianity.
What "fine-tuning" means
The basic laws and constants of physics — gravity, the strong and weak nuclear forces, electromagnetism, the cosmological constant, the mass ratios of elementary particles — have specific numerical values. If those values were slightly different, no stars, no chemistry, no life.
The numbers
- The cosmological constant is fine-tuned to roughly 1 part in 10120. Mathematical physicist Roger Penrose calculated that the initial entropy of the universe is fine-tuned to 1 in 1010123 — a number larger than the number of subatomic particles in the universe.
- Gravity: if stronger by 1 part in 1040, stars would burn out before life could evolve; if weaker, no stars form.
- The strong nuclear force: a 2% increase prevents hydrogen formation; a 5% decrease prevents carbon formation.
- The ratio of electron to proton mass: must be exquisitely precise for chemistry to work.
What the experts say
Sir Fred Hoyle (atheist astronomer): the carbon resonance required to produce life "looks like a put-up job"; "a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology."
Stephen Hawking: "The laws of science as we know them at present contain many fundamental numbers… The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life."
Martin Rees (UK Astronomer Royal, agnostic) wrote Just Six Numbers on six dimensionless constants whose values together determine whether life is possible.
The atheist responses
- The multiverse — maybe infinite universes exist with different constants. (See our entry on the multiverse — it has its own problems.)
- The anthropic principle — "we could only observe a universe that supports observers." True, but this confuses observability with explanation. Yes, we couldn't be here if conditions weren't right — but that doesn't explain why they are right.
- Some deeper unknown theory — maybe a future theory will require these constants. Maybe. So far none has appeared, and string theory in fact predicts vast numbers of possible universes, making fine-tuning more remarkable, not less.
A common skeptical confusion
"But life would have evolved to fit whatever conditions existed." No — without fine-tuning, the universe would have no stars, no atoms beyond hydrogen, or it would have collapsed or expanded too quickly for anything to form. There would be no "conditions" for life to evolve into.
The Christian inference
A Mind is the simplest, most natural explanation for a finely-tuned universe. We make this inference every day — when we see a watch, we infer a watchmaker. When physics shows us a universe calibrated for life across dozens of independent parameters, the same inference holds.
The Orthodox lens
The Fathers saw cosmic order as a sign of God. St. Basil's Hexaemeron, St. Maximus's Logos theology — the universe is shot through with intelligence because it comes from Intelligence. Modern cosmology has put numbers on what the Fathers always confessed.
A pastoral word
You do not have to choose between science and Christianity. Some of the strongest modern arguments for a Designer come from physics itself. The universe is calibrated for you to be here. The Designer wanted you in it.
