The popular picture (disembodied spirits floating on clouds) is closer to Plato than to the New Testament. Christianity is more earthy than that.
What Scripture actually says
Revelation 21–22 doesn't describe us going up to a distant heaven. It describes the New Jerusalem coming down. Heaven and earth are joined: "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people."
Resurrection is bodily (1 Cor. 15). The new creation includes physical reality — eating, drinking, recognizing, working, creating. "No more death, no more mourning, no more crying, no more pain" (Rev. 21:4) — but plenty of life.
What we'll do
Worship — yes, but worship as full participation in God's life, not endless church service. Work — meaningful labor restored to its joy (Rev. 22:3, "his servants will serve him"). Relationships — perfected, healed, deepened. Discovery — N.T. Wright suggests we will keep exploring the inexhaustible reality of God forever.
The Orthodox lens
For the Fathers, heaven is not a place; it is the unveiled presence of God experienced fully. The same divine Light the apostles glimpsed on Mount Tabor (Matt. 17) is what the saints behold permanently in glory. St. Symeon the New Theologian wrote that the saints in glory are like iron in fire — fully themselves, fully ablaze with God.
St. Gregory of Nyssa called heaven epektasis — eternal progress. Not static contemplation but endless deeper communion. "From glory to glory" (2 Cor. 3:18) forever.
C.S. Lewis on heaven
The Last Battle ends with the Pevensies entering Aslan's country: "All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story, which no one on earth has read, which goes on forever, in which every chapter is better than the one before."
A pastoral word
You will not be less yourself in heaven. You will be more yourself than you have ever been — every gift unbound, every wound healed, every love perfected. Everything that was truly good in this life will be there, transfigured. The Father who made you delights to share his eternity with you.
