Waiting for the Light: An Advent Week

Day 7 · Waiting for the Light: An Advent Week

Come, Lord Jesus

“He who testifies these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus!”Revelation 22:20

Reflection

Advent looks two ways at once: back to the child in Bethlehem, and forward to the day Christ will come again to make all things new. So we end this week with one of the Church's oldest prayers, kept in its Aramaic form in St Paul's letters (1 Corinthians 16:22): Maranatha, Come, Lord Jesus. We celebrate that he has come, we welcome him into our lives now, and we wait in hope for the fullness of his promise.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, you have come, you come to me now, and you will come again in glory. Thank you for the hope that holds my whole life together. Keep my heart awake and watchful, longing for the day when every tear is wiped away. With your whole church across the ages, I pray: Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Carry this with you

As Advent continues, how can you keep your heart watchful and hopeful for Christ?
