Fasting & Self-Control

Day 1 · Fasting & Self-Control

Making Room

“But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God's mouth.'"”Matthew 4:4

Reflection

Fasting begins not with what we give up, but with what we are reaching for. When Jesus answered the tempter in the wilderness, He was hungry, yet He pointed to a deeper hunger that only God can fill. To fast, even in a small way, is simply to make a little room, to let a quiet emptiness remind us that our truest life comes from the hand of the Lord.

A prayer

Father, I come to You hungry in ways I cannot always name. Teach me that I do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from You. As I set aside even a small comfort, fill the space I open with Your presence. Keep me from striving and let this be a gift, not a burden. Amen.

Carry this with you

What is one small appetite I could set aside this week, not to punish myself, but to make a little room for God?
