Fasting & Self-Control

Day 3 · Fasting & Self-Control

Fasting That Frees

“"Isn't this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Isn't it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?"”Isaiah 58:6-7

Reflection

True fasting was never meant to turn us inward on ourselves. Isaiah reminds us that the fast God loves opens our hands to the hungry and loosens the burdens others carry. When we deny ourselves a little, the love we save can be spent on someone in need, and our small hunger becomes a doorway to mercy.

A prayer

Lord, You have shown me a fast that sets people free. Let any small thing I give up turn outward into kindness, so that my hands open instead of closing. Show me one person today who is carrying a heavy load, and let me lighten it. May my self-denial become someone else's bread. Amen.

Carry this with you

Is there someone whose burden I could help carry today, perhaps with what I save by going without?
