Fasting & Self-Control

Day 5 · Fasting & Self-Control

A Trained and Trusting Heart

“Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.”1 Corinthians 9:25

Reflection

Paul compares the life of faith to an athlete in training, who learns to say a small no for the sake of a greater yes. The point is never deprivation for its own sake, but a heart trained to love what lasts. As this week ends, fasting and self-control can settle into something gentle and lifelong: a quiet trust that what God gives is better than anything we cling to.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, train my heart the way a runner is trained, not to grow harsh, but to grow free. Teach me to say a small no so I can say a deeper yes to You. Let self-control become not a chain but a calm, and let my trust rest in the crown that never fades. Thank You for walking with me this week; keep forming me in Your gentleness. Amen.

Carry this with you

Looking back over these five days, what small yes to God do I want to keep practicing in the weeks ahead?
