Loneliness

Day 3 · Loneliness

Near to the Brokenhearted

“Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”Psalm 34:18

Reflection

We sometimes imagine that God pulls back when we are at our lowest, but Scripture tells us the opposite: he comes especially close to the brokenhearted. Your sorrow is not a wall that keeps him out; it is one of the very places he chooses to meet you. You do not have to feel strong or look composed for God to draw near.

A prayer

Gracious God, my heart feels heavy and my spirit feels worn, and yet you promise to be near to me in exactly this place. Thank you that you are not distant from my pain but drawn toward it. Come and sit with me in my loneliness, and let your nearness become more real to me than my ache. I bring you my broken heart and trust you to hold it gently. Amen.

Carry this with you

What part of your heart feels most broken right now, and what would it mean to let God near to that part rather than hiding it away?
