Preparing for Confession

Day 2 · Preparing for Confession

Naming What Is True

“Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.”Psalm 51:1-2

Reflection

Honest confession begins not with a list but with mercy, for it is God's loving kindness that gives us the courage to tell the truth. We need neither excuse our wrongs nor magnify them; we name them plainly, the way a child speaks to a trusted parent. To say what is real is not the opposite of grace but the very place where grace meets us.

A prayer

Merciful God, I come to you leaning on your loving kindness rather than my own goodness. Give me the honesty to name what I have done without hiding and without despair. Wash what I cannot clean in myself, and let me know the gentleness of your forgiveness. Thank you that your mercies are many and never run dry. Amen.

Carry this with you

Is there something you have been softening or explaining away that, in honesty, you simply need to name before God?

Day 3: Trusting the Promise
