Preparing for Confession

Day 4 · Preparing for Confession

The Humble Heart

“But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'”Luke 18:13

Reflection

Jesus commended the prayer of a man who had no defense to offer, only a plea for mercy. True confession sets down our comparisons and our explanations and comes before God with nothing to hide behind. Humility is not self-hatred; it is the simple, freeing honesty of one who knows he is loved and still in need.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, teach me the prayer of the humble heart, the prayer that asks only for mercy. Loosen my grip on my excuses and my habit of measuring myself against others, and let me stand before you as I truly am. Be merciful to me, a sinner, and lift my eyes to see your kindness. I trust that you will not turn away an honest heart. Amen.

Carry this with you

Where do you tend to compare yourself to others, and how might setting that aside help you confess more honestly?
