Day 4 · Rest for the Weary
The Gift of Sabbath
“On the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy.”Genesis 2:2-3
Reflection
Rest is woven into creation itself. God, who never tires, rested — not from need, but to set a rhythm and to bless it. Jesus later said the Sabbath was made for us, a gift rather than a burden. To stop regularly is to declare, in practice, that the world keeps turning because God holds it, not because we do. Rest is an act of trust.
A prayer
Creator God, You who needed no rest chose to rest, and called it good. Forgive me for living as though the world depends on my ceaseless effort. Teach me the freedom of stopping — of trusting that You hold all things while I lay my work down. Help me receive rest as the gift You made it to be, and to keep it holy. Amen.
