The Beatitudes

Day 5 · The Beatitudes

The Merciful

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”Matthew 5:7

Reflection

Mercy is love that meets people in their failure and need without keeping score. Jesus ties our showing mercy to our receiving it — not as a transaction, but because those who have truly received God's mercy become merciful. To withhold mercy is to forget how much we have been given. Blessed are those who extend the grace they themselves live by.

A prayer

Merciful Father, I live entirely on Your mercy — undeserved, unearned, freely given. Forgive me for how easily I withhold from others what I depend on from You. Make me merciful: slow to judge, quick to forgive, tender toward people in their weakness. Let the mercy I have received flow freely through me to others today. Amen.

Carry this with you

Toward whom is God inviting you to show the mercy you yourself have received?
