1 Now the Lord had commanded a great whale to swallow up Jonas: and Jonas was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights.
1 Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.
2 And Jonas prayed to the Lord his God out of the belly of the whale,
2 He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
3 and said, I cried in my affliction to the Lord my God, and he hearkened to me, [even] to my cry out of the belly of hell: thou heardest my voice.
3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4 Thou didst cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and the floods compassed me: all thy billows and thy waves have passed upon me.
4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5 And I said, I am cast out of thy presence: shall I indeed look again toward thy holy temple?
5 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 Water was poured around me to the soul: the lowest deep compassed me, my head went down
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever; yet you have brought my life up from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7 to the clefts of the mountains; I went down into the earth, whose bars are the everlasting barriers: yet, O Lord my God, let my ruined life be restored.
7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8 When my soul was failing me, I remembered the Lord; and may my prayer come to thee into thy holy temple.
8 Those who regard vain idols forsake their own mercy.
9 They that observe vanities and lies have forsaken their own mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10 But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of praise and thanksgiving: all that I have vowed I will pay to thee, the Lord of [my] salvation.
10 Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
11 And the whale was commanded by the Lord, and it cast up Jonas on the dry [land].

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Jonas cried from the deep; from the whale's belly. He was not only beneath the waves, but also in the entrails of the beast; nevertheless, those waves and that body prevented not his prayer from reaching God, and the beast's belly could not contain the voice of his prayer.
