1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought sweet spices, that coming, they might anoint Jesus.
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they come to the sepulchre, the sun being now risen.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3 And they said one to another: Who shall roll us back the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
3 They were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”
4 And looking, they saw the stone rolled back. For it was very great.
4 for it was very big. Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe: and they were astonished.
5 Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed.
6 Who saith to them: Be not affrighted; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified: he is risen, he is not here, behold the place where they laid him.
6 He said to them, “Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him!
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee; there you shall see him, as he told you.
7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him, as he said to you.’”
8◆ But they going out, fled from the sepulchre. For a trembling and fear had seized them: and they said nothing to any man; for they were afraid.
8 They went out, and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid.
9◆ But he rising early the first day of the week, appeared first to Mary Magdalen, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
9 Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.
10◆ She went and told them that had been with him, who were mourning and weeping.
10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11◆ And they hearing that he was alive, and had been seen by her, did not believe.
11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they disbelieved.
12◆ And after that he appeared in another shape to two of them walking, as they were going into the country.
12 After these things he was revealed in another form to two of them as they walked, on their way into the country.
13◆ And they going told it to the rest: neither did they believe them.
13 They went away and told it to the rest. They didn’t believe them, either.
14◆ At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again.
14 Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table; and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn’t believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15◆ And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation.
16◆ He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned.
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.
17◆ And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues.
17 Y estas señales seguirán á los que creyeren: En mi nombre echarán fuera demonios; hablarán nuevas lenguas;
17 These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages;
18◆ They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover.
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19◆ And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God.
19 So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
20◆ But they going forth preached every where: the Lord working withal, and confirming the word with signs that followed.
20 They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 16:19 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter X)

Also, towards the conclusion of his Gospel, Mark says: "So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God;" confirming what had been spoken by the prophet: "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit Thou on My right hand, until I make Thy foes Thy footstool." …

  2. Quotes verse 16:16 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXI)

So again when we hear, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;" we do not of course understand it of one who believes in such a way "as the devils believe and tremble;" nor of those who receive baptism in such sort as Simon Magus, who though he could be baptized, could not be saved.
