1 (4-1) For the Leader; with string-music. A Psalm of David. (4-2) Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness, Thou who didst set me free when I was in distress; be gracious unto me, and hear my prayer.
1 For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm by David. Answer me when I call, God of my righteousness. Give me relief from my distress. Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.
2 (4-3) O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be put to shame, in that ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah
(Selah.)
2 You sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor? Will you love vanity and seek after falsehood? Selah.
3 (4-4) But know that the LORD hath set apart the godly man as His own; the LORD will hear when I call unto Him.
3 But know that Yahweh has set apart for himself him who is godly; Yahweh will hear when I call to him.
4 (4-5) Tremble, and sin not; commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah
(Selah.)
4 Stand in awe, and don’t sin. Search your own heart on your bed, and be still. Selah.
5 (4-6) Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.
5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness. Put your trust in Yahweh.
6 (4-7) Many there are that say: 'Oh that we could see some good!' LORD, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.
6 Many say, “Who will show us any good?” Yahweh, let the light of your face shine on us.
7 (4-8) Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than when their corn and their wine increase.
7 You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and their new wine are increased.
8 (4-9) In peace will I both lay me down and sleep; for Thou, LORD, makest me dwell alone in safety.
8 In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm IV)

"Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth." For this "end" signifies perfection, not consumption. Now it may be a question, whether every Song be a Psalm, or rather every Psalm a Song; whether there are some Songs which cannot be called Psalms, and some Psalms which cannot be called Songs.

… the bishop, known to the whole world as among the best of men, Thy devout servant; whose eloquent discourse did at that time strenuously dispense unto Thy people the flour of Thy wheat, the "gladness" of Thy "oil," and the sober intoxication of Thy "wine." To him was I unknowingly led by Thee, that by him I might knowingly be …

  3. Quotes verse 4:1 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

When I called upon Thee, Thou didst hear me, O God of my righteousness; Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. 4. Quotes verse 4:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

… "Who will show us any good?" But there, where I was angry with myself in my chamber, where I was inwardly pricked, where I had offered my "sacrifice," slaying my old man, and beginning the resolution of a new life, putting my trust in Thee, --there hadst Thou begun to grow sweet unto me, and to "put gladness in my …
