Psalms 84–86 (85–87) Brenton
Psalm 84 (85)
1 For the end, a Psalm for the sons of Core. 2 O Lord, thou hast taken pleasure in thy land: thou hast turned back the captivity of Jacob. 3 Thou hast forgiven thy people their transgressions; thou hast covered all their sins. Pause. 4 Thou hast caused all thy wrath to cease: thou hast turned from thy fierce anger. 5 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and turn thine anger away from us. 6 Wouldest thou be angry with us for ever? or wilt thou continue thy wrath from generation to generation? 7 O God, thou wilt turn and quicken us; and thy people shall rejoice in thee. 8 Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation. 9 I will hear what the Lord God will say concerning me: for he shall speak peace to his people, and to his saints, and to those that turn their heart toward him. 10 Moreover his salvation is near them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. 11 Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed [each other]. 12 Truth has sprung out of the earth; and righteousness has looked down from heaven. 13 For the Lord will give goodness; and our land shall yield her fruit. 14 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set his steps in the way.
Psalm 85 (86)
1 A Prayer of David. O Lord, incline thine ear, and hearken to me; for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my soul, for I am holy; save thy servant, O God, who hopes in thee. 3 Pity me, O Lord: for to thee will I cry all the day. 4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for to thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. 5 For thou, O Lord, art kind, and gentle; and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee. 6 Give ear to my prayer, O Lord; and attend to the voice of my supplication. 7 In the day of my trouble I cried to thee: for thou didst hear me. 8 There is none like to thee, O Lord, among the gods; and there are no [works] like to thy works. 9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come, and shall worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. 10 For thou art great, and doest wonders: thou art the only [and] the great God. 11 Guide me, O Lord, in thy way, and I will walk in thy truth: let my heart rejoice, that I may fear thy name. 12 I will give thee thanks, O Lord my God, with all my heart; and I will glorify thy name for ever. 13 For thy mercy is great toward me; and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. 14 O God, transgressors have risen up against me, and an assembly of violent [men] have sought my life; and have not set thee before them. 15 But thou, O Lord God, art compassionate and merciful, long-suffering, and abundant in mercy and true. 16 Look thou upon me, and have mercy upon me: give thy strength to thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid. 17 Establish with me a token for good; and let them that hate me see [it] and be ashamed; because thou, O Lord, hast helped me, and comforted me.
Psalm 86 (87)
1 A Psalm of a Song for the sons of Core. His foundations are in the holy mountains. 2 The Lord loves the gates of Sion, more than all the tabernacles of Jacob. 3 Glorious things have been spoken of thee, O city of God. Pause. 4 I will make mention of Raab and Babylon to them that know me: behold also the Philistines, and Tyre, and the people of the Ethiopians: these were born there. 5 A man shall say, Sion [is my] mother; and [such] a man was born in her; and the Highest himself has founded her. 6 The Lord shall recount [it] in the writing of the people, and of these princes that were born in her. Pause. 7 The dwelling of all within thee is as [the dwelling] of those that rejoice.
