YLT Young's Literal Translation WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon [him], 1 On one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the Good News, the priests and scribes came to him with the elders.
2 and spake unto him, saying, 'Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?' 2 They asked him, “Tell us: by what authority do you do these things? Or who is giving you this authority?”
2 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγοντες· εἰπὲ ἡμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, ἢ τίς ἐστιν ὁ δούς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην;
3 And he answering said unto them, 'I will question you — I also — one thing, and tell me: 3 He answered them, “I also will ask you one question. Tell me:
4 the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?' 4 the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?”
4 τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων;
5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying — 'If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him? 5 They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’
5 οἱ δὲ συνελογίσαντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες ὅτι ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
6 and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.' 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”
7 And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was], 7 They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.
8 and Jesus said to them, 'Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.' 8 Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
9 And he began to speak unto the people this simile: 'A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time, 9 He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time.
10 and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send [him] away empty. 10 At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty.
11 'And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty; 11 He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.
12 and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out. 12 He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him and threw him out.
13 'And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son — the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence; 13 The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’
14 and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours; 14 “But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’
15 and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed [him]; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them? 15 Then they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?
15 καὶ ἐκβαλόντες αὐτὸν ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος ἀπέκτειναν. τί οὖν ποιήσει αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος;
16 He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, 'Let it not be!' 16 He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard that, they said, “May that never be!”
17 and he, having looked upon them, said, 'What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected — this became head of a corner? 17 But he looked at them and said, “Then what is this that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected was made the chief cornerstone’?
17 ὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτοῖς εἶπε· τί οὖν ἐστι τὸ γεγραμμένον τοῦτο, λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας;
18 every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.' 18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whomever it falls on to dust.”
19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile. 19 The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people—for they knew he had spoken this parable against them.
20 And, having watched [him], they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor, 20 They watched him and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.
21 and they questioned him, saying, 'Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach; 21 They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.
22 Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?' 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
22 ἔξεστιν ἡμῖν Καίσαρι φόρον δοῦναι ἢ οὔ;
23 And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, 'Why me do ye tempt? 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test me?
23 κατανοήσας δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πανουργίαν εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· τί με πειράζετε;
24 shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, 'Of Caesar:' 24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” They answered, “Caesar’s.”
25 and he said to them, 'Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;' 25 He said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
26 and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent. 26 They weren’t able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer and were silent.
27 And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him, 27 Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection.
28 saying, 'Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless — that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother. 28 They asked him, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up children for his brother.
29 'There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless, 29 There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless.
30 and the second took the wife, and he died childless, 30 The second took her as wife, and he died childless.
31 and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven — they left not children, and they died; 31 The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died.
32 and last of all died also the woman: 32 Afterward the woman also died.
33 in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? — for the seven had her as wife.' 33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife.”
34 And Jesus answering said to them, 'The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage, 34 Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage.
35 but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage; 35 But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36 for neither are they able to die any more — for they are like messengers — and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again. 36 For they can’t die any more, for they are like the angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.
37 'And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; 37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord ‘The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
38 and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.' 38 Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”
39 And certain of the scribes answering said, 'Teacher, thou didst say well;' 39 Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you speak well.”
40 and no more durst they question him anything. 40 They didn’t dare to ask him any more questions.
41 And he said unto them, 'How do they say the Christ to be son of David, 41 He said to them, “Why do they say that the Christ is David’s son?
41 Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· πῶς λέγουσι τὸν Χριστὸν υἱὸν Δαυῒδ εἶναι;
42 and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 42 David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
43 till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool; 43 until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.”’
44 David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?' 44 “David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”
44 Δαυῒδ οὖν αὐτὸν Κύριον καλεῖ· καὶ πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν;
45 And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples, 45 In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples,
46 'Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers, 46 “Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts;
47 who devour the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, these shall receive more abundant judgment.' 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
