Forgiveness

Day 3 · Forgiveness

Releasing the Debt

“bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.”Colossians 3:13

Reflection

To forgive is to release someone from a debt we feel they owe us, handing the matter over to God rather than holding it close. This does not mean the wrong did not matter; it means trusting that justice and healing are safer in God's hands than in ours. Often it is a choice we make more than once, and that is alright.

A prayer

Father, I bring before you the one who hurt me, and with your help I choose to release the debt I have been holding. I cannot do this perfectly, so I give you both the offense and my own unsettled heart. Where I am still angry, be patient with me, and keep gently leading me toward freedom. Carry what is too heavy for me to carry alone. Amen.

Carry this with you

What would it mean, today, to hand this hurt over to God rather than keeping hold of it?
