Praying the Psalms

Day 2 · Praying the Psalms

A Psalm of Lament

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”Psalm 42:5,11

Reflection

The Psalms make room for the downcast soul without leaving it there. Lament names the trouble honestly and then preaches hope to itself. 'I will yet praise Him' is faith reaching toward a future it cannot yet feel.

A prayer

God, my soul is downcast, and I will not hide it from You. Yet I put my hope in You. I will yet praise You — my Savior and my God. Carry me until the praise returns. Amen.

Carry this with you

What is troubling your soul today? Speak it to God, then add 'I will yet praise Him.'
