2 For forty days, being tested by the Evil One. And he had no food in those days; and when they came to an end, he was in need of food. 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.
3 And the Evil One said to him, If you are the Son of God, give orders to this stone to become bread. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4 And Jesus made answer to him, It has been said in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need. 4 Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”
5 And he took him up and let him see all the kingdoms of the earth in a minute of time. 5 The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the Evil One said, I will give you authority over all these, and the glory of them, for it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone at my pleasure. 6 The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I want.
7 If then you will give worship to me, it will all be yours. 7 If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.”
8 And Jesus in answer said to him, It has been said in the Writings, Give worship to the Lord your God, and be his servant only. 8 Jesus answered him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”
9 And he took him to Jerusalem and put him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, let yourself go down from here; for it is said in the Writings, 9 He led him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here,
10 He will give his angels orders to take care of you: 10 for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’
11 And, In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone. 11 and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus made answer and said to him, It is said in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test. 12 Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
13 And when all these tests were ended the Evil One went away from him for a time. 13 When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time.
14 And Jesus came back to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news of him went through all the country round about. 14 Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area.
15 And he was teaching in their Synagogues and all men gave him praise. 15 He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been as a child, and he went, as his way was, into the Synagogue on the Sabbath, and got up to give a reading. 16 He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him and, opening the book, he came on the place where it is said, 17 The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because I am marked out by him to give good news to the poor; he has sent me to make well those who are broken-hearted; to say that the prisoners will be let go, and the blind will see, and to make the wounded free from their chains, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,
19 To give knowledge that the year of the Lord's good pleasure is come. 19 and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 And shutting the book he gave it back to the servant and took his seat: and the eyes of all in the Synagogue were fixed on him. 20 He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 Then he said to them, Today this word has come true in your hearing. 21 He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
22 And they were all giving witness, with wonder, to the words of grace which came from his mouth: and they said, Is not this the son of Joseph? 22 All testified about him and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth; and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
22 καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγον· οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωσήφ;
23 And he said to them, Without doubt you will say to me, Let the medical man make himself well: the things which to our knowledge were done at Capernaum, do them here in your country. 23 He said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’”
24 And he said to them, Truly I say to you, No prophet is honoured in his country. 24 He said, “Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
25 Truly I say to you, There were a number of widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months and there was no food in the land; 25 But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.
26 But Elijah was not sent to one of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 26 Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
27 And there were a number of lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and not one of them was made clean, but only Naaman the Syrian. 27 There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.”
28 And all who were in the Synagogue were very angry when these things were said to them. 28 They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue as they heard these things.
29 And they got up and took him out of the town to the edge of the mountain on which their town was, so that they might send him down to his death. 29 They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.
30 But he came through them and went on his way. 30 But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way.
31 And he came down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee; and he was giving them teaching on the Sabbath. 31 He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day,
32 And they were surprised at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.
33 And there was a man in the Synagogue who had an unclean spirit; and he gave a loud cry and said, 33 In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice,
34 Let us be! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? have you come to put an end to us? I have knowledge who you are, the Holy One of God. 34 saying, “Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!”
35 And Jesus said to him, Be quiet, and come out of him. And when the evil spirit had put him down on the earth in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no damage. 35 Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
36 And wonder came on them all and they said to one another, What are these words? for with authority and power he gives orders to the evil spirits and they come out. 36 Amazement came on all and they spoke together, one with another, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”
36 καὶ ἐγένετο θάμβος ἐπὶ πάντας, καὶ συνελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες· τίς ὁ λόγος οὗτος, ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ καὶ δυνάμει ἐπιτάσσει τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασι, καὶ ἐξέρχονται;
37 And there was much talk about him in all the places round about. 37 News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.
38 And he got up and went out of the Synagogue and went into the house of Simon. And Simon's wife's mother was very ill with a burning heat; and in answer to their prayers for her 38 He rose up from the synagogue and entered into Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him to help her.
39 He went near her, and with a sharp word he gave orders to the disease and it went away from her; and straight away she got up and took care of their needs. 39 He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them.
40 And at sundown all those who had anyone ill with any sort of disease, took them to him, and he put his hands on every one of them and made them well. 40 When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 And evil spirits came out of a number of them, crying out and saying, You are the Son of God. But he gave them sharp orders not to say a word, because they had knowledge that he was the Christ. 41 Demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Rebuking them, he didn’t allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 And when it was day, he came out and went to a waste place; and great numbers of people came looking for him, and they came to him and would have kept him from going away. 42 When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn’t go away from them.
43 But he said to them, I have to give the good news of the kingdom of God in other towns, because that is why I was sent. 43 But he said to them, “I must preach the good news of God’s Kingdom to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent.”
44 And he was teaching in the Synagogues of Galilee. 44 He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
