Notes on this text (1)

1 A Song of the going up. Those whose hope is in the Lord are like the mountain of Zion, which may not be moved, but keeps its place for ever. 2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people, from this time and for ever. 3 For the rod of sinners will not be resting on the heritage of the upright; so that the upright may not put out their hands to evil. 4 Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in heart. 5 But as for such as are turned out of the straight way, the Lord will take them away with the workers of evil. Let peace be on Israel.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXIV)

Ye already well know, dearest brethren, that a "Song of Degrees," is a song of our ascent: and that this ascent is not effected by the feet of the body, but by the affections of the heart.

...Words of God, speaking to Saul about David. Or again, Do good, O Lord, unto the good...and all other like expressions concerning those of us who are praised, upon whom it is a kind of effluence from the Supreme Good, and has come to them in a secondary degree.
