LXXUP Updated Brenton English Septuagint
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 And if the thief be found in the breach [made by himself] and be smitten and die, there shall not be blood shed for him.
1 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
2 But if the sun be risen upon him, he is guilty, he shall die instead; and if a thief have nothing, let him be sold in compensation for what he has stolen.
2 If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.
3 And if the thing stolen be left and be in his hand alive, whether ox or sheep, he shall restore them twofold.
3 If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4 And if anyone should feed down a field or a vineyard, and should send in his beast to feed down another field, he shall make compensation of his own field according to his produce; and if he shall have fed down the whole field, he shall pay for compensation the best of his own field and the best of his vineyard.
4 If the stolen property is found in his hand alive, whether it is ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double.
5 And if fire have gone forth and caught thorns, and should also set on fire threshing floors or ears of corn or a field, he that kindled the fire shall make compensation.
5 “If a man causes a field or vineyard to be eaten by letting his animal loose, and it grazes in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field, and from the best of his own vineyard.
6 And if anyone give to his neighbor money or goods to keep, and they be stolen out of the man’s house, if the thief be found, he shall repay double.
6 “If fire breaks out, and catches in thorns so that the shocks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field are consumed; he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
7 But if the thief be not found, the master of the house shall come forward before God, and shall swear that surely he has not wrought wickedly in regard of any part of his neighbor’s deposit,
7 “If a man delivers to his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, if the thief is found, he shall pay double.
8 according to every injury alleged, both concerning a calf, and an ass, and a sheep, and a garment, and every alleged loss, whatsoever in fact it may be—the judgment of both shall proceed before God, and he that is convicted by God shall repay to his neighbor double.
8 If the thief isn’t found, then the master of the house shall come near to God, to find out whether or not he has put his hand on his neighbor’s goods.
9 And if anyone give to his neighbor to keep a calf or sheep or any beast, and it be wounded or die or be taken, and no one know,
9 For every matter of trespass, whether it is for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any kind of lost thing, about which one says, ‘This is mine,’ the cause of both parties shall come before God. He whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.
10 an oath of God shall be between both, [each swearing] that he has surely not at all been guilty in the matter of his neighbor’s deposit; and so his master shall hold him guiltless, and he shall not make compensation.
10 “If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is injured, or driven away, no man seeing it;
11 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make compensation to the owner.
11 the oath of Yahweh shall be between them both, he has not put his hand on his neighbor’s goods; and its owner shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution.
12 And if it be seized of beasts, he shall bring him to [witness] the prey, and he shall not make compensation.
12 But if it is stolen from him, the one who stole shall make restitution to its owner.
13 And if anyone borrow [ought] of his neighbor, and it be wounded or die or be carried away, and the owner of it be not with it, he shall make compensation.
13 If it is torn in pieces, let him bring it for evidence. He shall not make good that which was torn.
14 But if the owner be with it, he shall not make compensation: but if it be a hired thing, there shall be [a compensation] to him instead of his hire.
14 “If a man borrows anything of his neighbor’s, and it is injured, or dies, its owner not being with it, he shall surely make restitution.
15 And if anyone deceive a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her for a wife to himself.
15 If its owner is with it, he shall not make it good. If it is a leased thing, it came for its lease.
16 And if her father positively refuse, and will not consent to give her to him for a wife, he shall pay compensation to her father according to the amount of the dowry of virgins.
16 “If a man entices a virgin who isn’t pledged to be married, and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife.
17 Ye shall not save the lives of sorcerers.
17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
18 Every one that lies with a beast ye shall surely put to death.
18 “You shall not allow a sorceress to live.
19 He that sacrifices to any gods but to the Lord alone, shall be destroyed by death.
19 “Whoever has sex with an animal shall surely be put to death.
20 And ye shall not hurt a stranger, nor afflict him; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
20 “He who sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh only, shall be utterly destroyed.
21 Ye shall hurt no widow or orphan.
21 “You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
22 And if ye should afflict them by ill-treatment, and they should cry aloud to me, I will surely hear their voice.
22 “You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child.
23 And I will be very angry, and will slay you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows and your children orphans.
23 If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry;
24 And if thou shouldest lend money to thy poor brother who is by thee, thou shalt not be hard upon him, thou shalt not exact usury of him.
24 and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25 And if thou take thy neighbor’s garment for a pledge, thou shalt restore it to him before sunset.
25 “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor. You shall not charge him interest.
26 For this is his clothing, this is the only covering of his nakedness; wherein shall he sleep? If then he shall cry to me, I will hearken to him, for I am merciful.
26 If you take your neighbor’s garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down,
27 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor speak ill of the ruler of thy people.
27 for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.
28 Thou shalt not keep back the firstfruits of thy threshing floor and press. The firstborn of thy sons thou shalt give to me.
28 “You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people.
29 So shalt thou do with thy calf and thy sheep and thine ass; seven days shall it be under the mother, and the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.
29 “You shall not delay to offer from your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. “You shall give the firstborn of your sons to me.
30 And ye shall be holy men to me; and ye shall not eat flesh taken of beasts, ye shall cast it to the dog.
30 You shall do likewise with your cattle and with your sheep. It shall be with its mother seven days, then on the eighth day you shall give it to me. 31 “You shall be holy men to me, therefore you shall not eat any meat that is torn by animals in the field. You shall cast it to the dogs.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 22:20 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book X)

On the contrary, these higher powers acquiesce heartily in the divine sentence in which it is written, "He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed."

  2. Quotes verse 22:20 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book X, Chapters 7–9)

… intelligible and unchangeable law, from that heavenly council-chamber,--for they sit in counsel regarding us,--that holy Scripture, descended to us by the ministry of angels, in which it is written, "He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed," --this Scripture, this law, these precepts, have been confirmed by such miracles, that it is …

  3. Quotes verse 22:20 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIX, Chapters 18–21)

But, not to speak of their character, it is written in the law of the true God, "He that sacrificeth unto any god save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed." He, therefore, who uttered so menacing a commandment decreed that no worship should be given either to good or bad gods.
