WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 And it came to pass on a certain day, That the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, And the devil came among them To stand before the Lord.
1 Again, on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan came also among them to present himself before Yahweh.
2 And the Lord said to the devil, Whence comest thou? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.
2 Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth on the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
3 And the Lord said to the devil, Hast thou then observed my servant Job, That there is none of [men] upon the earth like him, A harmless, true, blameless, godly man, Abstaining from all evil? And he yet cleaves to innocence, Whereas thou hast told [me] to destroy his substance without cause?
3 Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”
4 And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, All that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.
4 Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
5 Nay, but put forth thy hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: Verily he will curse thee to [thy] face.
5 But stretch out your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce you to your face.”
6 And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to thee; Only save his life.
6 Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life.”
7 So the devil went out from the Lord, And smote Job with sore boils from [his] feet to [his] head.
7 So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head.
8 And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, And sat upon a dungheap outside the city.
8 He took for himself a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat among the ashes.
9 And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long wilt thou hold out, saying,
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still maintain your integrity? Renounce God, and die.”
9a Behold, I wait yet a little while, Expecting the hope of my deliverance?
·
9b For, behold, thy memorial is abolished from the earth, [Even thy] sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb Which I bore in vain with sorrows;
·
9c And thou thyself sittest down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms,
·
9d And I am a wanderer and a servant From place to place and house to house, Waiting for the setting of the sun, That I may rest from my labors and my pangs which now beset me:
·
9e But say some word against the Lord, and die.
·
10 But he looked on her, and said to her, Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.
10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job didn’t sin with his lips.
11 Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, Came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Temanites, Bildad sovereign of the Shuhites, Zophar king of the Minaeans: And they came to him with one accord, To comfort and to visit him.
11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.
12 And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; And they cried with a loud voice, and wept, And rent every one his garment, And sprinkled dust upon [their heads],
12 When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept; and they each tore his robe, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.
13 And they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, And no one of them spoke; For they saw that [his] affliction was dreadful and very great.
13 So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 2:10 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXXI)

If we have received good from the hand of the Lord, shall we not bear the evil?"
