Brenton Brenton's English Septuagint
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 In the year when Tanathan came to Azotus, when he was sent by Arna king of the Assyrians, and warred against Azotus, and took it;
1 EN el año que vino Thartán á Asdod, cuando le envió Sargón rey de Asiria, y peleó contra Asdod y la tomó;
2 then the Lord spoke to Esaias the son of Amos, saying, Go and take the sackcloth off thy loins, and loose thy sandals from off thy feet, and do thus, going naked and barefoot.
2 En aquel tiempo habló Jehová por Isaías hijo de Amoz, diciendo: Ve, y quita el saco de tus lomos, y descalza los zapatos de tus pies. E hízolo así, andando desnudo y descalzo.
3 And the Lord said, As my servant Esaias has walked naked and barefoot three years, there shall be three years for signs and wonders to the Egyptians and Ethiopians;
3 Y dijo Jehová: De la manera que anduvo mi siervo Isaías desnudo y descalzo tres años, señal y pronóstico sobre Egipto y sobre Etiopía;
4 for thus shall the king of the Assyrians lead the captivity of Egypt and the Ethiopians, young men and old, naked and barefoot, having the shame of Egypt exposed.
4 Así llevará el rey de Asiria la cautividad de Egipto y la transmigración de Etiopía, de mozos y de viejos, desnuda y descalza, y descubiertas las nalgas para vergüenza de Egipto.
5 And the Egyptians being defeated shall be ashamed of the Ethiopians, in whom they had trusted; for they were their glory.
5 Y se turbarán y avergonzarán de Etiopía su esperanza, y de Egipto su gloria.
6 And they that dwell in this island shall say in that day, Behold, we trusted to flee to them for help, who could not save themselves from the king of the Assyrians: and how shall we be saved?
6 Y dirá en aquel día el morador de esta isla: Mirad qué tal fué nuestra esperanza, donde nos acogimos por socorro para ser libres de la presencia del rey de Asiria: ¿y cómo escaparemos?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 20:2 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVIII)

    Since Adam too was "naked" in paradise, "and was not ashamed;" and Isaiah was "naked, and barefoot," and more glorious than all the Jews; and Joseph also, when he stripped himself, did then more than ever shine forth.
