A great persecution arose against the assembly which was in Jerusalem in that day. They were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except for the apostles.
2 And devout men took order for Stephen’s funeral, and made great mourning over him. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and lamented greatly over him.
3 But Saul made havock of the church, entering in from house to house, and dragging away men and women, committed them to prison. 3 But Saul ravaged the assembly, entering into every house and dragged both men and women off to prison.
4 They therefore that were dispersed, went about preaching the word of God. 4 Therefore those who were scattered abroad went around preaching the word.
5 And Philip going down to the city of Samaria, preached Christ unto them. 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.
6 And the people with one accord were attentive to those things which were said by Philip, hearing, and seeing the miracles which he did. 6 The multitudes listened with one accord to the things that were spoken by Philip when they heard and saw the signs which he did.
7 For many of them who had unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out. 7 For unclean spirits came out of many of those who had them. They came out, crying with a loud voice. Many who had been paralyzed and lame were healed.
8 And many, taken with the palsy, and that were lame, were healed. 8 There was great joy in that city.
9 There was therefore great joy in that city. Now there was a certain man named Simon, who before had been a magician in that city, seducing the people of Samaria, giving out that he was some great one: 9 But there was a certain man, Simon by name, who used to practice sorcery in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, making himself out to be some great one,
10 To whom they all gave ear, from the least to the greatest, saying: This man is the power of God, which is called great. 10 to whom they all listened, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is that great power of God.”
11 And they were attentive to him, because, for a long time, he had bewitched them with his magical practices. 11 They listened to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his sorceries.
12 But when they had believed Philip preaching of the kingdom of God, in the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching good news concerning God’s Kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also; and being baptized, he adhered to Philip. And being astonished, wondered to see the signs and exceeding great miracles which were done. 13 Simon himself also believed. Being baptized, he continued with Philip. Seeing signs and great miracles occurring, he was amazed.
14 Now when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. 14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,
15 Who, when they were come, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit;
16 For he was not as yet come upon any of them; but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 16 for as yet he had fallen on none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of Christ Jesus.
17 Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 17 Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 And when Simon saw, that by the imposition of the hands of the apostles, the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 18 Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,
19 Saying: Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I shall lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said to him: 19 saying, “Give me also this power, that whomever I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Keep thy money to thyself, to perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!
21 Thou hast no part nor lot in this matter. For thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 21 You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart isn’t right before God.
22 Do penance therefore for this thy wickedness; and pray to God, that perhaps this thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee. 22 Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and ask God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.
23 For I see thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bonds of iniquity. 23 For I see that you are in the poison of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.”
24 Then Simon answering, said: Pray you for me to the Lord, that none of these things which you have spoken may come upon me. 24 Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that none of the things which you have spoken happen to me.”
25 And they indeed having testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel to many countries of the Samaritans. 25 They therefore, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the Good News to many villages of the Samaritans.
26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying: Arise, go towards the south, to the way that goeth down from Jerusalem into Gaza: this is desert. 26 Then an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise, and go toward the south to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert.”
27 And rising up, he went. And behold a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch, of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge over all her treasures, had come to Jerusalem to adore. 27 He arose and went; and behold, there was a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship.
28 And he was returning, sitting in this chariot, and reading Isaias the prophet. 28 He was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.
29 And the Spirit said to Philip: Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.”
30 And Philip running thither, heard him reading the prophet Isaias. And he said: Thinkest thou that thou understandest what thou readest? 30 Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
30 προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν, καὶ εἶπεν· ἆρά γε γινώσκεις ἃ ἀναγινώσκεις;
31 Who said: And how can I, unless some man shew me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. 31 He said, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?” He begged Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 And the place of the scripture which he was reading was this: He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb without voice before his shearer, so openeth he not his mouth. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture which he was reading was this, “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter. As a lamb before his shearer is silent, so he doesn’t open his mouth.
33 In humility his judgment was taken away. His generation who shall declare, for his life shall be taken from the earth? 33 In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away. Who will declare His generation? For his life is taken from the earth.”
34 And the eunuch answering Philip, said: I beseech thee, of whom doth the prophet speak this? of himself, or of some other man? 34 The eunuch answered Philip, “Who is the prophet talking about? About himself, or about someone else?”
34 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ εὐνοῦχος τῷ Φιλίππῳ εἶπε· δέομαί σου, περὶ τίνος ὁ προφήτης λέγει τοῦτο; περὶ ἑαυτοῦ ἢ περὶ ἑτέρου τινός;
35 Then Philip, opening his mouth, and beginning at this scripture, preached unto him Jesus. 35 Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture, preached to him about Jesus.
36◆ And as they went on their way, they came to a certain water; and the eunuch said: See, here is water: what doth hinder me from being baptized? 36 As they went on the way, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Behold, here is water. What is keeping me from being baptized?”
36 ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἦλθον ἐπί τι ὕδωρ, καί φησιν ὁ εὐνοῦχος· ἰδοὺ ὕδωρ· τί κωλύει με βαπτισθῆναι;
37◆ And Philip said: If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answering, said: I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 37 Not in this translation
38◆ And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch: and he baptized him. 38 He commanded the chariot to stand still, and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more. And he went on his way rejoicing. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the eunuch didn’t see him any more, for he went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found in Azotus; and passing through, he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. Passing through, he preached the Good News to all the cities until he came to Caesarea.
