1 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab upon mount Nebo, to the top of Phasga over against Jericho: and the Lord shewed him all the land of Galaad as far as Dan.
1 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Jericho. Yahweh showed him all the land of Gilead to Dan,
2 And all Nephtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasses, and all the land of Juda unto the furthermost sea,
2 Y á todo Nephtalí, y la tierra de Ephraim y de Manasés, toda la tierra de Judá hasta la mar postrera;
2 and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, to the Western Sea,
3 And the south part, and the breadth of the plain of Jericho the city of palm trees as far as Segor.
3 and the south, and the Plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, to Zoar.
4 And the Lord said to him: This is the land, for which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to thy seed. Thou hast seen it with thy eyes, and shalt not pass over to it.
4 Yahweh said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”
5 And Moses the servant of the Lord died there, in the land of Moab, by the commandment of the Lord:
5 Y murió allí Moisés siervo de Jehová, en la tierra de Moab, conforme al dicho de Jehová.
5 So Moses the servant of Yahweh died there in the land of Moab, according to Yahweh’s word.
6 And he buried him in the valley of the land of Moab over against Phogor: and no man hath known of his sepulchre until this present day.
6 He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows where his tomb is to this day.
7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, neither were his teeth moved.
7 Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died. His eye was not dim, nor his strength gone.
8 And the children of Israel mourned for him in the plains of Moab thirty days: and the days of their mourning in which they mourned for Moses were ended.
8 The children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the days of weeping in the mourning for Moses were ended.
9 And Josue the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands upon him. And the children of Israel obeyed him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.
9 Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. The children of Israel listened to him, and did as Yahweh commanded Moses.
10 And there arose no more a prophet in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,
10 Y nunca más se levantó profeta en Israel como Moisés, á quien haya conocido Jehová cara á cara;
10 Since then, there has not arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom Yahweh knew face to face,
11 In all the signs and wonders, which he sent by him, to do in the land of Egypt to Pharao, and to all his servants, and to his whole land,
11 En todas las señales y prodigios que le envió Jehová á hacer en tierra de Egipto á Faraón, y á todos sus siervos, y á toda su tierra;
11 in all the signs and the wonders which Yahweh sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
12 And all the mighty hand, and great miracles, which Moses did before all Israel.
12 and in all the mighty hand, and in all the awesome deeds, which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 34:9 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XVI)

    For it is written, And Jesus the son of Nun was filled with a spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him.
