1 And the Lord answering Job out of the whirlwind, said:
1 ENTONCES respondió Jehová á Job desde la oscuridad, y dijo:
1 Moreover Yahweh answered Job,
2 Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and do thou tell me.
2 Cíñete ahora como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y explícame.
2 “Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
3 Wilt thou make void my judgment: and condemn me, that thou mayst be justified?
3 ¿Invalidarás tú también mi juicio? ¿me condenarás á mí, para justificarte á ti?
3 Then Job answered Yahweh,
4 And hast thou an arm like God, and canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
4 ¿Tienes tú brazo como Dios? ¿y tronarás tú con voz como él?
4 “Behold, I am of small account. What will I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 Clothe thyself with beauty, and set thyself up on high and be glorious, and put on goodly garments.
5 Atavíate ahora de majestad y de alteza: y vístete de honra y de hermosura.
5 I have spoken once, and I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
6 Scatter the proud in thy indignation, and behold every arrogant man, and humble him.
6 Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind:
7 Look on all that are proud, and confound them, and crush the wicked in their place.
7 “Now brace yourself like a man. I will question you, and you will answer me.
8 Hide them in the dust together, and plunge their faces into the pit.
8 Encúbrelos á todos en el polvo, venda sus rostros en la oscuridad;
8 Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?
9 Then I will confess that thy right hand is able to save thee.
9 Or do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like him?
10 Behold behemoth whom I made with thee, he eateth grass like an ox.
10 He aquí ahora behemoth, al cual yo hice contigo; hierba come como buey.
10 “Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity. Array yourself with honor and majesty.
11 His strength is in his loins, and his force in the navel of his belly.
11 Pour out the fury of your anger. Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.
12 He setteth up his tail like a cedar, the sinews of his testicles are wrapped together.
12 Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him. Crush the wicked in their place.
13 His bones are like pipes of brass, his gristle like plates of iron.
13 Hide them in the dust together. Bind their faces in the hidden place.
14 He is the beginning of the ways of God, who made him, he will apply his sword.
14 Then I will also admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 To him the mountains bring forth grass: there all the beasts of the field shall play.
15 “See now behemoth, which I made as well as you. He eats grass as an ox.
16 He sleepeth under the shadow, in the covert of the reed, and in moist places.
16 Look now, his strength is in his thighs. His force is in the muscles of his belly.
17 The shades cover his shadow, the willows of the brook shall compass him about.
17 He moves his tail like a cedar. The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18 Behold, he will drink up a river, and not wonder: and he trusteth that the Jordan may run into his mouth.
18 His bones are like tubes of bronze. His limbs are like bars of iron.
19 In his eyes as with a hook he shall take him, and bore through his nostrils with stakes.
19 He is the chief of the ways of God. He who made him gives him his sword.
20 Canst thou draw out the leviathan with a hook, or canst thou tie his tongue with a cord?

20 Surely the mountains produce food for him, where all the animals of the field play.
21 Canst thou put a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with a buckle?

21 He lies under the lotus trees, in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.
22 Will he make many supplications to thee, or speak soft words to thee?

22 The lotuses cover him with their shade. The willows of the brook surround him.
23 Will he make a covenant with thee, and wilt thou take him to be a servant for ever?

23 Behold, if a river overflows, he doesn’t tremble. He is confident, though the Jordan swells even to his mouth.
24 Shalt thou play with him as with a bird, or tie him up for thy handmaids?

24 Shall any take him when he is on the watch, or pierce through his nose with a snare?
25 Shall friends cut him in pieces, shall merchants divide him?

26 Wilt thou fill nets with his skin, and the cabins of fishes with his head?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 40:23 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture III)

According to Job, there was in the waters the dragon that draweth up Jordan into his mouth.
