1 Blessed be the Lord my God, who teacheth my hands to fight, and my fingers to war.
144:1 By David. Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, who trains my hands to war, and my fingers to battle—
2 My mercy, and my refuge: my support, and my deliverer: My protector, and I have hoped in him: who subdueth my people under me.
144:2 my loving kindness, my fortress, my high tower, my deliverer, my shield, and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me.
3 Lord, what is man, that thou art made known to him? or the son of man, that thou makest account of him?
144:3 Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him? Or the son of man, that you think of him?
4 Man is like to vanity: his days pass away like a shadow.
144:4 Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away.
5 Lord, bow down thy heavens and descend: touch the mountains and they shall smoke.
144:5 Oh Jehová, inclina tus cielos y desciende: toca los montes, y humeen.
144:5 Part your heavens, Yahweh, and come down. Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.
6 Send forth lightning, and thou shalt scatter them: shoot out thy arrows, and thou shalt trouble them.
144:6 Despide relámpagos, y disípalos; envía tus saetas, y contúrbalos.
144:6 Throw out lightning, and scatter them. Send out your arrows, and rout them.
7 Put forth thy hand from on high, take me out, and deliver me from many waters: from the hand of strange children:
144:7 Envía tu mano desde lo alto; redímeme, y sácame de las muchas aguas, de la mano de los hijos extraños;
144:7 Stretch out your hand from above, rescue me, and deliver me out of great waters, out of the hands of foreigners,
8 Whose mouth hath spoken vanity: and their right hand is the right hand of iniquity.
144:8 whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 To thee, O God, I will sing a new canticle: on the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings I will sing praises to thee.
144:9 Oh Dios, á ti cantaré canción nueva: con salterio, con decacordio cantaré á ti.
144:9 I will sing a new song to you, God. On a ten-stringed lyre, I will sing praises to you.
10 Who givest salvation to kings: who hast redeemed thy servant David from the malicious sword:
144:10 Tú, el que da salud á los reyes, el que redime á David su siervo de maligna espada.
144:10 You are he who gives salvation to kings, who rescues David, his servant, from the deadly sword.
11 Deliver me, And rescue me out of the hand of strange children; whose mouth hath spoken vanity: and their right hand is the right hand of iniquity:
144:11 Redímeme, y sálvame de mano de los hijos extraños, cuya boca habla vanidad, y su diestra es diestra de mentira.
144:11 Rescue me, and deliver me out of the hands of foreigners, whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12 Whose sons are as new plants in their youth: Their daughters decked out, adorned round about after the similitude of a temple:
144:12 Que nuestros hijos sean como plantas crecidas en su juventud; nuestras hijas como las esquinas labradas á manera de [las de] un palacio;
144:12 Then our sons will be like well-nurtured plants, our daughters like pillars carved to adorn a palace.
13 Their storehouses full, flowing out of this into that. Their sheep fruitful in young, abounding in their goings forth:
144:13 Nuestros graneros llenos, provistos de toda suerte [de grano]; nuestros ganados, que paran á millares y diez millares en nuestras plazas:
144:13 Our barns are full, filled with all kinds of provision. Our sheep produce thousands and ten thousands in our fields.
14 Their oxen fat. There is no breach of wall, nor passage, nor crying out in their streets.
144:14 Our oxen will pull heavy loads. There is no breaking in, and no going away, and no outcry in our streets.
15 They have called the people happy, that hath these things: but happy is that people whose God is the Lord.
144:15 Happy are the people who are in such a situation. Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 144.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXLIII)

The title of the Psalm is, "To David himself, when his son was pursuing him." We know from the Books of Kings that this happened:...but we must recognise here another David, truly "strong in hand," which is the explanation of David, even our Lord Jesus Christ. For all those events of past time were figures of things to come.
