1 A psalm of a canticle, at the dedication of David’s house.

2 I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me: and hast not made my enemies to rejoice over me.
GLORIFICARTE he, oh Jehová; porque me has ensalzado, y no hiciste á mis enemigos alegrarse de mí.
30:1 A Psalm. A Song for the Dedication of the Temple. By David. I will extol you, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me.
3 O Lord my God, I have cried to thee, and then hast healed me.
30:2 Jehová Dios mío, á ti clamé, y me sanaste.
30:2 Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.
4 Thou hast brought forth, O Lord, my soul from hell: thou hast saved me from them that go down into the pit.
30:3 Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
5 Sing to the Lord, O ye his saints: and give praise to the memory of his holiness.
30:4 Sing praise to Yahweh, you saints of his. Give thanks to his holy name.
6 For wrath is in his indignation; and life in his good will. In the evening weeping shall have place, and in the morning gladness.
30:5 For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
7 And in my abundance I said: I shall never be moved.
30:6 Y dije yo en mi prosperidad: no seré jamás conmovido;
30:6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”
8 O Lord, in thy favour, thou gavest strength to my beauty. Thou turnedst away thy face from me, and I became troubled.
30:7 You, Yahweh, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.
9 To thee, O Lord, will I cry: and I will make supplication to my God.
30:8 A ti, oh Jehová, clamaré; y al Señor suplicaré.
30:8 I cried to you, Yahweh. I made supplication to the Lord:
10 What profit is there in my blood, whilst I go down to corruption? Shall dust confess to thee, or declare thy truth?
30:9 “What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise you? Shall it declare your truth?
11 The Lord hath heard, and hath had mercy on me: the Lord became my helper.
30:10 Hear, Yahweh, and have mercy on me. Yahweh, be my helper.”
12 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: thou hast cut my sackcloth, and hast compassed me with gladness:
30:11 Has tornado mi endecha en baile; desataste mi saco, y ceñísteme de alegría.
30:11 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me. You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness,
13 To the end that my glory may sing to thee, and I may not regret: O Lord my God, I will give praise to thee for ever.
30:12 Por tanto á ti cantaré, gloria [mía], y no estaré callado. Jehová Dios mío, te alabaré para siempre.
30:12 to the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 30.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 30:11 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily IX)

"Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: Thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing to thee, and that I be not pricked." What is this, "That I be not pricked?" That there be not that which shall goad my conscience.
