1 This letter comes from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the authority of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who is our hope.
1 PABLO, apóstol de Jesucristo por la ordenación de Dios nuestro Salvador, y del Señor Jesucristo, nuestra esperanza;
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,
2 I'm sending it to you Timothy. You are my true son because of your trust in God. May you have grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 When I was on my way to Macedonia I asked you to stay behind in Ephesus, so that you could speak with those who teach false ideas and insist that they stop.
3 As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
4 They shouldn't concern themselves with legends and never-ending obsessions about ancestry. Such ideas only lead to pointless debates, instead of understanding God as we trust in him.
4 and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith.
5 The reason why I insist on this is so we may have love that comes from a pure heart, from a clear conscience and sincere trust in God.
5 But the goal of this command is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith,
6 Some have deviated from these things, and have ended up talking nonsense.
6 De lo cual distrayéndose algunos, se apartaron á vanas pláticas;
6 from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking,
7 They have ambitions to be teachers of the law, but they have no idea what they're talking about or what they're so boldly announcing!
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say nor about what they strongly affirm.
8 Now we recognize that the law is good if people use it properly.
8 Sabemos empero que la ley es buena, si alguno usa de ella legítimamente;
8 But we know that the law is good if a person uses it lawfully,
9 We also know that law isn't laid down for those who do what is good and right, but for those who are rebellious and ignore the law. It applies to people who have no use for God, who are sinful, who treat nothing as holy and are completely irreligious. It's for those who kill fathers and mothers, for murderers,
9 as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 for those who are sexually immoral, homosexuals, kidnappers, liars, false witnesses—and anything else that's opposed to good teachings
10 Para los fornicarios, para los sodomitas, para los ladrones de hombres, para los mentirosos y perjuros, y si hay alguna otra cosa contraria á la sana doctrina;
10 for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine,
11 as determined by the wonderful good news of our blessed God which he entrusted to me.
11 according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
12 I'm just so grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord for the strength he's given me, and that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to work for him.
12 I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service,
13 Even though I used to insult God, and persecuted and abused God's people, God showed me mercy because of my ignorance and unbelief.
13 although I used to be a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
14 Our Lord in his grace filled me to overflowing with trust and love that comes from Christ Jesus.
14 The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
15 You can trust this saying that everyone should accept: “Christ Jesus came to this world to save sinners,” and I'm the worst of them.
15 The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
16 For this reason I was shown mercy—since I'm the worst sinner, Jesus Christ could demonstrate his infinite patience as an example to those who choose to trust in him and gain eternal life.
16 However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.
17 Honor and glory forever and ever to the eternal King, the immortal, invisible, and only God! Amen.
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18 These are the instructions I want to give to you, Timothy, my son, following the prophecies that brought you this far, so you can fight the good fight!
18 Este mandamiento, hijo Timoteo, te encargo, para que, conforme á las profecías pasadas de ti, milites por ellas buena milicia;
18 I commit this instruction to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which were given to you before, that by them you may wage the good warfare,
19 Keep on trusting God and make sure you have a clear conscience. Some have refused to do this and have shipwrecked their trust in God.
19 holding faith and a good conscience, which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith,
20 Hymenaeus and Alexander are such people, and I have “handed them over to Satan” to teach them not to misrepresent God.
20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they might be taught not to blaspheme.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

    [The R.V. omits kuriouand translates: Christ Jesus our hope, tes elpidos hemon.] 1. Great and admirable is the dignity of an Apostle, and we find Paul constantly setting forth the causes of it, not as if he took the honor to himself, but as intrusted with it, and being under the necessity of so doing.

    Inasmuch as certain men have set the truth aside, and bring in lying words and vain genealogies, which, as the apostle says, "minister questions rather than godly edifying which is in faith," and by means of their craftily-constructed plausibilities draw away the minds of the inexperienced and take them captive, [I have felt constrained, my dear friend, to compose the …
