1 After we had said goodbye to them, we sailed directly to Cos, and the next day on to Rhodes. From there we went to Patara
1 When we had departed from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara.
2 where we found a ship going to Phoenicia. We went on board and set sail.
2 Having found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.
3 We passed within sight of Cyprus on the left, and continued on to Syria where we landed at Tyre, where the ship's cargo was to be unloaded.
3 When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed to Syria and landed at Tyre, for the ship was there to unload her cargo.
4 We found the believers and stayed there for a week. Through the Holy Spirit the believers told Paul not to go to Jerusalem.
4 Having found disciples, we stayed there seven days. These said to Paul through the Spirit that he should not go up to Jerusalem.
5 When the time was up, we left and went back to the ship to continue our journey. All the believers, and wives and children, accompanied us as we left the city. We kneeled down on the beach and prayed, and said our goodbyes.
5 When those days were over, we departed and went on our journey. They all, with wives and children, brought us on our way until we were out of the city. Kneeling down on the beach, we prayed.
6 Then we boarded the ship, and they went back home.
6 After saying goodbye to each other, we went on board the ship, and they returned home again.
7 Our voyage from Tyre ended at Ptolemais where we greeted the believers and stayed with them for a day.
7 When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers and stayed with them one day.
8 The next day we left and went to Caesarea. We stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist (one of the Seven).
8 On the next day, we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.
9 Philip had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
9 Y éste tenía cuatro hijas, doncellas, que profetizaban.
9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.
10 After we'd stayed there for several days, a prophet called Agabus arrived from Judea.
10 Y parando nosotros allí por muchos días, descendió de Judea un profeta, llamado Agabo;
10 As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
11 Approaching us, he took Paul's belt, and bound his own hands and feet. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘This is how the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will hand him over to the foreigners.’”
11 Coming to us and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “The Holy Spirit says: ‘So the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”
12 When we heard this, we and the believers there pleaded with Paul not to go to Jerusalem.
12 When we heard these things, both we and the people of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.
13 However, Paul answered, “What are you doing, crying and breaking my heart? I'm ready not only to be bound in Jerusalem, but to die in Jerusalem for the sake of the Lord Jesus.”
13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
14 Since he couldn't be persuaded otherwise we gave up, and said, “May the Lord's will be done.”
14 When he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The Lord’s will be done.”
15 After this we packed our bags and headed for Jerusalem.
15 After these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem.
16 Some of the believers from Caesarea came with us, and they took us to the home of Mnason, where we were going to stay. He came from Cyprus and was one of the early believers.
16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us, bringing one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we would stay.
17 When we arrived in Jerusalem, the believers there welcomed us warmly.
17 When we had come to Jerusalem, the brothers received us gladly.
18 The next day Paul went with us to see James, and all the church leaders were there.
18 Y al día siguiente Pablo entró con nosotros á Jacobo, y todos los ancianos se juntaron;
18 The day following, Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present.
19 After greeting them, Paul went through in detail everything God had done for the foreigners through his ministry.
19 When he had greeted them, he reported one by one the things which God had worked among the Gentiles through his ministry.
20 When they heard what had happened they praised God and told Paul, “Brother, you can see how many thousands of Jews have come to trust in the Lord, and they all keep the Law very carefully.
20 They, when they heard it, glorified God. They said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law.
21 They have been told that you teach Jews living among the foreigners to ignore the Law of Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children and not to follow our customs.
21 They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children and not to walk after the customs.
22 So what should we do about it? People will certainly get to hear that you've arrived here.
22 What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come.
23 This is what we want you to do: Four men among us have taken a vow.
23 Therefore do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
24 Go with them and perform the purification rituals with them, paying for them to have their heads shaved. That way everyone will know there's no truth to the rumors they've heard about you, but that you yourself observe the Law in the way that you live.
24 Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses for them, that they may shave their heads. Then all will know that there is no truth in the things that they have been informed about you, but that you yourself also walk keeping the law.
25 As to the foreigners who have trusted the Lord, we already wrote a letter regarding our decision that they should refrain from eating food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from any animal that is strangled, and from sexual immorality.”
25 But concerning the Gentiles who believe, we have written our decision that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from food offered to idols, from blood, from strangled things, and from sexual immorality.”
26 So Paul took the men with him, and the next day went and purified himself with them. Then he went to the Temple to give notice regarding the end of the time of purification and the offering which would be made for each of them.
26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day purified himself and went with them into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.
27 The seven days were almost over when some Jews from Asia saw Paul in the Temple and incited the crowd against him and seized him.
27 When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him,
28 “Men of Israel, help!” they shouted. “This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere to oppose our people, the Law, and the Temple. He's also brought Greeks into the Temple, defiling this holy place.”
28 crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place. Moreover, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place!”
29 (They said this because they had seen him previously in the city with Trophimus the Ephesian and presumed that Paul had brought him into the Temple.)
29 For they had seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.
30 The whole city was shocked by this and people came running. They grabbed hold of Paul and dragged him out of the Temple. Immediately the doors were shut.
30 All the city was moved and the people ran together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple. Immediately the doors were shut.
31 As they tried to kill him, news came to the Roman troop commander that the whole of Jerusalem was in an uproar.
31 Y procurando ellos matarle, fué dado aviso al tribuno de la compañía, que toda la ciudad de Jerusalem estaba alborotada;
31 As they were trying to kill him, news came up to the commanding officer of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
32 Immediately the commander took some centurions and soldiers and ran down to the mob. When the mob saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
32 Immediately he took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. They, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, stopped beating Paul.
33 Then the commander came over and arrested Paul, and ordered him to be bound with two chains. He asked who he was, and what he had done.
33 Then the commanding officer came near, arrested him, commanded him to be bound with two chains, and inquired who he was and what he had done.
34 Some in the mob were shouting one thing and some another. Since the commander couldn't find out the truth due to all the noise and confusion, he ordered Paul brought into the fortress.
34 Some shouted one thing and some another, among the crowd. When he couldn’t find out the truth because of the noise, he commanded him to be brought into the barracks.
35 When Paul got to the stairs, he had to be carried by the soldiers because the mob was so violent.
35 Y como llegó á las gradas, aconteció que fué llevado de los soldados á causa de la violencia del pueblo;
35 When he came to the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd;
36 People in the crowd that was following were shouting, “Get rid of him!”
36 for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, “Away with him!”
37 Just as he was about to be taken inside the fortress, Paul asked the commander, “Can I tell you something?” “Do you know Greek?” asked the commander.
37 As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he asked the commanding officer, “May I speak to you?” He said, “Do you know Greek?
38 “Aren't you the Egyptian who recently incited a rebellion and led four thousand Assassins into the desert?”
38 Aren’t you then the Egyptian who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?”
39 “I am a Jew, a citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, an important city,” Paul replied. “Please let me talk to the people.”
39 But Paul said, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city. I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.”
40 The commander gave Paul permission to speak. So Paul stood on the stairs and motioned for silence. When it was quiet he spoke to them in Aramaic.
40 When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with his hand to the people. When there was a great silence, he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, saying,

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 21:18 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles (Homily XLVI)

This was the Bishop of Jerusalem; and to him (Paul) is sent on an earlier occasion. This (James) was brother of the Lord; a great and admirable man. (To him, it says,) "Paul entered in with us." Mark the (Bishop's) unassuming behavior: "and the elders" (were present).

  2. Quotes verse 21:39 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XLVIII)

Of which city was the Apostle Paul, being born in Tarsus of Cilicia. But some have understood by it Carthage, being haply sometimes so named, or in some language so signified.

  3. Quotes verse 21:20 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily V)

This man gives directions to Paul himself, when he was after this come up again to Jerusalem, saying, "Thou seest, brother, how many thousands there are of them that are come together." So great was his understanding and his zeal, or rather so great the power of Christ.

  4. Quotes verse 21:11 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily X)

Thus, for instance, both Peter appears to have been "girded," and Paul; for it saith, "the man that owneth this girdle." And Elijah too was thus arrayed, and every one of the saints, because they were at work continually, laboring, and busying themselves either in journeyings, or about some other necessary matter; and not for this cause only, but also …

  5. Quotes verse 21:20 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXXVI)

For indeed even Paul was of them, and the thousands that believed in Jerusalem; for, "thou seest it is said, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe." And if some continued in their sin, to themselves let them impute their punishment.
