1 (2-2) Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly.
1 Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.
2 (2-3) And he said: I called out of mine affliction unto the LORD, and He answered me; out of the belly of the nether-world cried I, and Thou heardest my voice.
2 He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
3 (2-4) For Thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all Thy waves and Thy billows passed over me.
3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4 (2-5) And I said: 'I am cast out from before Thine eyes'; yet I will look again toward Thy holy temple.
4 I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5 (2-6) The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; the deep was round about me; the weeds were wrapped about my head.
5 The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 (2-7) I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars closed upon me for ever; yet hast Thou brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever; yet you have brought my life up from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7 (2-8) When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came in unto Thee, into Thy holy temple.
7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8 (2-9) They that regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
8 Those who regard vain idols forsake their own mercy.
9 (2-10) But I will sacrifice unto Thee with the voice of thanksgiving; that which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is of the LORD.
9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10 (2-11) And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
10 Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
