1 Ya se acercaban a Jerusalén; y cuando estaban cerca de Betfagué y de Betania, frente al Monte de los Olivos, Jesús envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo:
1 When they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
1 Καὶ ὅτε ἐγγίζουσιν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς Βηθσφαγῆ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν, ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
2 «Vayan al pueblecito que está enfrente. Al entrar verán un burro atado, en el que nadie ha montado. Desátenlo y tráiganmelo.
2 and said to them, “Go your way into the village that is opposite you. Immediately as you enter into it, you will find a young donkey tied, on which no one has sat. Untie him and bring him.
2 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κώμην τὴν κατέναντι ὑμῶν, καὶ εὐθέως εἰσπορευόμενοι εἰς αὐτὴν εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον, ἐφ᾽ ὃν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων κεκάθικε· λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε.
3 Y si alguien les pregunta por qué lo hacen, díganle que el Señor lo necesita y que pronto lo devolverá».
3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs him;’ and immediately he will send him back here.”
3 καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ· τί ποιεῖτε τοῦτο; εἴπατε ὅτι ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει, καὶ εὐθέως αὐτὸν ἀποστέλλει πάλιν ὧδε.
4 Los dos discípulos obedecieron y hallaron al burrito en la calle, atado junto a una puerta. Y lo desataron.
4 They went away, and found a young donkey tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied him.
4 ἀπῆλθον δὲ καὶ εὗρον τὸν πῶλον δεδεμένον πρὸς τὴν θύραν ἔξω ἐπὶ τοῦ ἀμφόδου, καὶ λύουσιν αὐτόν.
5 Unos que estaban allí les preguntaron: «¿Por qué lo desatan?».
5 Some of those who stood there asked them, “What are you doing, untying the young donkey?”
5 καί τινες τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς· τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον;
6 Ellos les respondieron lo que Jesús les había dicho; y los dejaron ir.
6 They said to them just as Jesus had said, and they let them go.
6 οἱ δὲ εἶπον αὐτοῖς καθὼς ἐνετείλατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἀφῆκαν αὐτούς.
7 Y le llevaron, pues, el burro a Jesús. Los discípulos pusieron sus mantos sobre el burro, y Jesús se montó.
7 They brought the young donkey to Jesus and threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it.
7 καὶ ἤγαγον τὸν πῶλον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτῷ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ.
8 Y muchos tendían por el camino sus mantos o ramas de árboles.
8 Many spread their garments on the way, and others were cutting down branches from the trees and spreading them on the road.
8 πολλοὶ δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν ἔστρωσαν εἰς τὴν ὁδόν, ἄλλοι δὲ στοιβάδας ἔκοπτον ἐκ τῶν δένδρων καὶ ἐστρώννυον εἰς τὴν ὁδόν.
9 Y los que iban delante y los que iban detrás gritaban: ―¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!
9 Those who went in front and those who followed cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
9 καὶ οἱ προάγοντες καὶ οἱ ἀκολουθοῦντες ἔκραζον λέγοντες· ὡσαννά, εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου.
10 ¡Bendito el reino que viene, que es el reino de nuestro padre David! ¡Hosanna en las alturas!
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
10 εὐλογημένη ἡ ἐρχομένη βασιλεία ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου τοῦ πατρός ἡμῶν Δαυΐδ· ὡσαννὰ ἐν τοῖς ὑψίστοις.
11 Ya en Jerusalén, Jesús entró al templo, miró detenidamente a su alrededor y salió. Como ya estaba avanzada la tarde, se marchó a Betania con los doce.
11 Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
11 Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἰς τὸ ἱερόν· καὶ περιβλεψάμενος πάντα, ὀψίας ἤδη οὔσης τῆς ὥρας, ἐξῆλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα.
12 A la siguiente mañana, al salir de Betania, tuvo hambre,
12 The next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.
12 Καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐπείνασε·
13 por lo que se acercó a una frondosa higuera. Esperaba hallar algunos higos, pero al hallar sólo hojas, porque no era la temporada de higos,
13 Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.
13 καὶ ἰδὼν συκῆν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔχουσαν φύλλα, ἦλθεν εἰ ἄρα τι εὑρήσει ἐν αὐτῇ· καὶ ἐλθὼν ἐπ᾽ αὐτὴν οὐδὲν εὗρεν εἰ μὴ φύλλα· οὐ γὰρ ἦν καιρὸς σύκων.
14 dijo al árbol: «¡Nadie más va a volver a comer jamás de tu fruto!». Y lo oyeron los discípulos.
14 Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” and his disciples heard it.
14 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτῇ· μηκέτι ἐκ σοῦ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μηδεὶς καρπὸν φάγοι. καὶ ἤκουον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.
15 Al llegar a Jerusalén, se dirigió al templo. Allí echó fuera a los que vendían y compraban, y volcó las mesas de los que cambiaban dinero y las sillas de los que vendían palomas.
15 They came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered into the temple and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and overthrew the money changers’ tables and the seats of those who sold the doves.
15 Καὶ ἔρχονται πάλιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα· καὶ εἰσελθὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ τοὺς ἀγοράζοντας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ, καὶ τὰς τραπέζας τῶν κολλυβιστῶν καὶ τὰς καθέδρας τῶν πωλούντων τὰς περιστερὰς κατέστρεψε,
16 Y no permitía que nadie entrara al templo cargando mercancías.
16 He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.
16 καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν ἵνα τις διενέγκῃ σκεῦος διὰ τοῦ ἱεροῦ,
17 Y se puso a enseñar. Les decía: «Las Escrituras dicen que mi templo ha de ser “casa de oración de todas las naciones”, pero ustedes lo han convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».
17 He taught, saying to them, “Isn’t it written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers!”
17 καὶ ἐδίδασκε λέγων αὐτοῖς· οὐ γέγραπται ὅτι ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς κληθήσεται πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν; ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε σπήλαιον λῃστῶν.
18 Cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley oyeron esto, comenzaron a urdir un plan para matar a Jesús. Le tenían miedo a Jesús porque toda la gente estaba maravillada con su enseñanza.
18 The chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.
18 καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς, καὶ ἐζήτουν πῶς αὐτὸν ἀπολέσωσιν· ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ αὐτόν, ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἐξεπλήσσετο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ.
19 Y cuando se hizo de noche, Jesús y sus discípulos salieron de la ciudad.
19 When evening came, he went out of the city.
19 καὶ ὅτε ὀψὲ ἐγένετο, ἐξεπορεύετο ἔξω τῆς πόλεως.
20 A la siguiente mañana, al pasar junto a la higuera, los discípulos vieron que se había secado hasta las raíces.
20 As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.
20 Καὶ παραπορευόμενοι πρωῒ εἶδον τὴν συκῆν ἐξηραμμένην ἐκ ῥιζῶν.
21 Pedro, recordando lo que había pasado, exclamó: ―¡Maestro, mira! La higuera que maldijiste está seca.
21 Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”
21 καὶ ἀναμνησθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος λέγει αὐτῷ· ῥαββί, ἴδε ἡ συκῆ ἣν κατηράσω ἐξήρανται.
22 Jesús respondió: ―Tengan fe en Dios.
22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.
22 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς· ἔχετε πίστιν Θεοῦ.
23 Les aseguro que si alguien le dice a este monte que se mueva y se arroje al mar, y no duda que va a suceder, el monte lo obedecerá.
23 For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening, he shall have whatever he says.
23 ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ, ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ μὴ διακριθῇ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ, ἀλλὰ πιστεύσει ὅτι ἃ λέγει γίνεται, ἔσται αὐτῷ ὃ ἐὰν εἴπῃ.
24 Por eso les digo que todo lo que pidan en oración, crean que lo recibirán, y así será.
24 Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them.
24 διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν, πάντα ὅσα ἂν προσευχόμενοι αἰτεῖσθε, πιστεύετε ὅτι λαμβάνετε, καὶ ἔσται ὑμῖν.
25 Pero cuando oren, perdonen a los que les hayan hecho algo, para que el Padre que está en el cielo les perdone a ustedes sus pecados.
25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.
25 καὶ ὅταν στήκητε προσευχόμενοι, ἀφίετε εἴ τι ἔχετε κατά τινος, ἵνα καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς ἀφῇ ὑμῖν τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν.
26 Pero si no perdonan, nuestro Padre que está en los cielos no les perdonará sus pecados.
26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”
26 εἰ δὲ ὑμεῖς οὐκ ἀφίετε, οὐδὲ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἀφήσει τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν.
27 Vinieron nuevamente a Jerusalén. Andaba Jesús caminando por el templo cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los ancianos
27 They came again to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him,
27 Καὶ ἔρχονται πάλιν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα· καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ περιπατοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι
28 le preguntaron: ―¿Quién te dio autoridad para hacer lo que haces?
28 and they began saying to him, “By what authority do you do these things? Or who gave you this authority to do these things?”
28 καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; ἢ τίς σοι ἔδωκε τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῇς;
29 ―Les diré con qué autoridad hago esto —les contestó Jesús—, si ustedes me responden a otra pregunta.
29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
29 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ἐπερωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ ἕνα λόγον, καὶ ἀποκρίθητέ μοι, καὶ ἐρῶ ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.
30 El bautismo que Juan practicaba, ¿era de Dios o de los hombres? ¡Contéstenme!
30 The baptism of John—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.”
30 τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἦν ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; ἀποκρίθητέ μοι.
31 Ellos deliberaron en voz baja y se decían: ―Si le respondemos que era de Dios, nos preguntará por qué no le creímos.
31 They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven;’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
31 καὶ ἐλογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες· ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ· διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
32 Y si decimos que era de los hombres, el pueblo se rebelará contra nosotros, porque creía que Juan era un profeta.
32 If we should say, ‘From men’”—they feared the people, for all held John to really be a prophet.
32 ἀλλὰ εἴπωμεν, ἐξ ἀνθρώπων; — ἐφοβοῦντο τὸν λαόν· ἅπαντες γὰρ εἶχον τὸν Ἰωάννην ὅτι προφήτης ἦν.
33 Por fin respondieron: ―No lo sabemos. Y Jesús les contestó: ―Pues yo tampoco les diré quién me dio autoridad para hacer estas cosas.
33 They answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
33 καὶ ἀποκριθέντες λέγουσι τῷ Ἰησοῦ· οὐκ οἴδαμεν. καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀποκριθεὶς λέγει αὐτοῖς· οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ.

How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

For he who says that Christ only worked miracles, for the miracles' sake, may say too that He was ignorant that it was not the time for fruit, when He sought figs upon the fig-tree. For it was not the time for that fruit, as the Evangelist testifies; and yet being hungry He sought for fruit upon the tree.
