1 Then resorted vnto him all the publicans and synners for to heare him.
1 Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him.
2 And the pharises and scribes murmured sayinge: He receaved to his company synners and eateth with them.
2 The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”
3 Then put he forthe this similitude to the sayinge:
3 Y él les propuso esta parábola, diciendo:
3 He told them this parable:
4 What man of you havynge an hundred shepe yf he loose one of thee doth not leve nynty and nyne in the wyldernes and goo after that which is loost vntyll he fynde him?
4 “Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?
5 And when he hath founde him he putteth him on his shulders with ioye:
5 Y hallada, la pone sobre sus hombros gozoso;
5 When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And assone as he cometh home he calleth to gedder his lovers and neghbours sayinge vnto them: reioyse with me for I have founde my shepe which was loost.
6 When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7 I say vnto you that lyke wyse ioye shalbe in heven over one synner that repenteth moore then over nynety and nyne iuste persons whiche nede noo repentaunce.
7 I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
8 Ether what woman havynge .x. grotes yf she loose one doth not lyght a candell and swepe the housse and seke diligently tyll she fynde it?
8 “Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?
9 And when she hath founde it she calleth her lovers and her neghbours sayinge: Reioyce with me for I have founde the groate which I had loost.
9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost!’
10 Lykwyse I saye vnto you ioye is made in the presence of the angels of god over one synner that repenteth.
10 Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”
11 And he sayde: a certayne man had two sonnes
11 Y dijo: Un hombre tenía dos hijos;
11 He said, “A certain man had two sons.
12 and the yonger of them sayde to his father: father geve me my parte of the goodes that to me belongeth. And he devided vnto them his substaunce.
12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of your property.’ So he divided his livelihood between them.
13 And not longe after the yonger sonne gaddered all that he had to gedder and toke his iorney into a farre countre and theare he wasted his goodes with royetous lyvinge.
13 Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all that he had ther rose a greate derth thorow out all that same londe and he began to lacke.
14 When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need.
15 And he went and clave to a citesyn of that same countre which sent him to his felde to kepe his swyne.
15 He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
16 And he wold fayne have filled his bely with the coddes that the swyne ate: and noo man gave him.
16 He wanted to fill his belly with the pods that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.
17 Then he came to him selfe and sayde: how many hyred servauntes at my fathers have breed ynough and I dye for honger.
17 But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!
18 I will aryse and goo to my father and will saye vnto him: father I have synned agaynst heven and before the
18 Me levantaré, é iré á mi padre, y le diré: Padre, he pecado contra el cielo, y contra ti;
18 I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.
19 and am no moare worthy to be called thy sonne make me as one of thy hyred servauntes.
19 I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’
20 And he arose and went to his father. And when he was yet a greate waye of his father sawe him and had compassion and ran and fell on his necke and kyssed him.
20 “He arose and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and ran, fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the sonne sayd vnto him: father I have synned agaynst heven and in thy sight and am no moare worthy to be called thy sonne.
21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 But his father sayde to his servautes: bringe forth that best garment and put it on him and put a rynge on his honde and showes on his fete.
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
23 And bringe hidder that fatted caulfe and kyll him and let vs eate and be mery:
23 Y traed el becerro grueso, y matadlo, y comamos, y hagamos fiesta:
23 Bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let’s eat and celebrate;
24 for this my sonne was deed and is alyve agayne he was loste and is now founde. And they began to be merye.
24 for this, my son, was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found.’ Then they began to celebrate.
25 The elder brother was in the felde and when he cam and drewe nye to the housse he herde minstrelcy and daunsynge
25 Y su hijo el mayor estaba en el campo; el cual como vino, y llegó cerca de casa, oyó la sinfonía y las danzas;
25 “Now his elder son was in the field. As he came near to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 and called one of his servauntes and axed what thoose thinges meate.
26 He called one of the servants to him and asked what was going on.
27 And he sayd vnto him: thy brother is come and thy father had kylled the fatted caulfe because he hath receaved him safe and sounde.
27 He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’
28 And he was angry and wolde not goo in. Then came his father out and entreated him.
28 But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and begged him.
29 He answered and sayde to his father: Loo these many yeares have I done the service nether brake at eny tyme thy commaundment and yet gavest thou me never soo moche as a kyd to make mery with my lovers:
29 Mas él respondiendo, dijo al padre: He aquí tantos años te sirvo, no habiendo traspasado jamás tu mandamiento, y nunca me has dado un cabrito para gozarme con mis amigos:
29 But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
30 but assone as this thy sonne was come which hath devoured thy goodes with harlootes thou haste for his pleasure kylled the fatted caulfe.
30 But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’
31 And he sayd vnto him: Sonne thou wast ever with me and all that I have is thyne:
31 El entonces le dijo: Hijo, tú siempre estás conmigo, y todas mis cosas son tuyas.
31 “He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.
32 it was mete that we shuld make mery and be glad: for this thy brother was deed and is a lyve agayne: and was loste and is founde.
32 But it was appropriate to celebrate and be glad, for this, your brother, was dead, and is alive again. He was lost, and is found.’”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 15:8 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XVI–XVII)

In the same way they oracularly declare, that one power having departed also from the Duodecad, has perished; and this was represented by the woman who lost the drachma, and, lighting a lamp, again found it.

Far, indeed, was I wandering away from Thee, being even shut out from the very husks of the swine, whom with husks I fed. For how much better, then, are the fables of the grammarians and poets than these snares!
