Webster Noah Webster's Bible (1833)
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. How amiable [are] thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longeth, and even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
3 Yes, the sparrow hath found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, [even] thy altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
4 Blessed [are] they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.
(Selah.)
5 Blessed [is] the man whose strength [is] in thee; in whose heart [are] the ways [of them] .
6 [Who] passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.
7 They go from strength to strength, [every one of them] in Zion appeareth before God.
8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah.
(Selah.)
9 Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thy anointed.
10 For a day in thy courts [is] better than a thousand. I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God [is] a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts, blessed [is] the man that trusteth in thee.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXIII)

The people of God, then, in this Psalm saith, "O God, who shall be like unto Thee?" (ver. 1). Which I suppose to be more fitly taken of Christ, because, being made in the likeness of men, He was thought by those by whom He was despised to be comparable to other men: for He was even "reckoned among the …

  2. Quotes verse 84:5 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters VI–XI)

By Thy Gift we are inflamed, and are borne upwards; we wax hot inwardly, and go forwards. We ascend Thy ways that be in our heart, and sing a song of degrees; we glow inwardly with Thy fire, with Thy good fire, and we go, because we go upwards to the peace of Jerusalem; for glad was I when they …

  3. Quotes verse 84:10 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily IV)

"For I had rather," it is said, "be an outcast in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of sinners." And "one day in thy courts is better than thousands." They would have chosen then ten thousand times rather to be outcasts at home, than kings in Babylon.

  4. Quotes verse 84:2 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book X, Chapters 24–25)

And hence in another psalm He says, "My soul longeth, yea, even faileth, for the courts of the Lord." Yet, though he had said of both his heart and his flesh that they were failing, he did not say, O God of my heart and my flesh, but, O God of my heart; for by the heart the flesh is …

  5. Quotes verse 84:4 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXII, Chapter 30)

I am admonished also by the sacred song, in which I read or hear the words, "Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house, O Lord; they will be still praising Thee." All the members and organs of the incorruptible body, which now we see to be suited to various necessary uses, shall contribute to the praises of God; for …
