1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they may be saved.
1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved.
2 For I bear them testimony that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
3 For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.
3 For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
4 For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
4 For Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is by the law, That the man who doeth these things shall live by them.
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law, “The one who does them will live by them.”
6 But the righteousness which is by faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down.)
6 But the righteousness which is of faith says this, “Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down);
7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring Christ again from the dead.)
7 or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)”
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;” that is, the word of faith which we preach:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
9 that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.
10 For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, whoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all, is rich to all that call upon him,
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.
13 For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
13 For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?
14 πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσονται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσουσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσουσι χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things?
15 And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
16 But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
16 Ἀλλ᾽ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ· Ἡσαΐας γὰρ λέγει· Κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσε τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν;
17 So then, faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.
18 But I say, didn’t they hear? Yes, most certainly, “Their sound went out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”
19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First, Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by [them that are] no people, [and] by a foolish nation I will anger you.
19 But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says, “I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation. I will make you angry with a nation void of understanding.”
20 But Isaiah is very bold, and saith, I was found by them that sought me not; I was made manifest to them that asked not for me.
20 Isaiah is very bold and says, “I was found by those who didn’t seek me. I was revealed to those who didn’t ask for me.”
21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands to a disobedient and gainsaying people.
21 But about Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 10:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XVII)

He is now going again to rebuke them more vehemently than before. Wherefore he again does away with every suspicion of hatred, and makes a great effort beforehand to correct misapprehension. Do not then, he says, mind words or accusations, but observe that it is not in any hostile spirit that I say this.

And again, when Paul says, "How beautiful are the feet of those bringing glad tidings of good things, and preaching the Gospel of peace," he shows clearly that it was not merely one, but there were many who used to preach the truth.

  4. Quotes verse 10:2 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily VI)

… I know nothing by myself," saith one, "yet am I not hereby justified:" --both for what we have done in ignorance, and what in knowledge; "For I bear them record," it is said, "that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge;" but yet this doth not suffice for an excuse for them.

And again he aims at them, and speaks thus, Say not in thine heart, who shall ascend into heaven; or who shall descend into the deep? that is, to bring up Christ from the dead; and in like manner warning as he has elsewhere written again, Remember Jesus Christ raised from the dead; and again, And if Christ be …
