YLT Young's Literal Translation WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 Having put aside, then, all evil, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envyings, and all evil speakings, 1 Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
2 as new-born babes the word's pure milk desire ye, that in it ye may grow, 2 as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow,
3 if so be ye did taste that the Lord [is] gracious, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 to whom coming — a living stone — by men, indeed, having been disapproved of, but with God choice, precious, 4 Come to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
5 and ye yourselves, as living stones, are built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 5 You also as living stones are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 Wherefore, also, it is contained in the Writing: 'Lo, I lay in Zion a chief corner-stone, choice, precious, and he who is believing on him may not be put to shame;' 6 Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
7 to you, then, who are believing [is] the preciousness; and to the unbelieving, a stone that the builders disapproved of, this one did become for the head of a corner, 7 For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,”
8 and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence — who are stumbling at the word, being unbelieving, — to which also they were set; 8 and, “a stumbling stone and a rock of offense.” For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9 and ye [are] a choice race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired, that the excellences ye may shew forth of Him who out of darkness did call you to His wondrous light; 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10 who [were] once not a people, and [are] now the people of God; who had not found kindness, and now have found kindness. 10 In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Beloved, I call upon [you], as strangers and sojourners, to keep from the fleshly desires, that war against the soul, 11 Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims to abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
12 having your behaviour among the nations right, that in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, of the good works having beheld, they may glorify God in a day of inspection. 12 having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Be subject, then, to every human creation, because of the Lord, whether to a king, as the highest, 13 Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme,
14 whether to governors, as to those sent through him, for punishment, indeed, of evil-doers, and a praise of those doing good; 14 or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
15 because, so is the will of God, doing good, to put to silence the ignorance of the foolish men; 15 For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.
16 as free, and not having the freedom as the cloak of the evil, but as servants of God; 16 Live as free people, yet not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
17 to all give ye honour; the brotherhood love ye; God fear ye; the king honour ye. 17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18 The domestics! be subjecting yourselves in all fear to the masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cross; 18 Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
19 for this [is] gracious, if because of conscience toward God any one doth endure sorrows, suffering unrighteously; 19 For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
20 for what renown [is it], if sinning and being buffeted, ye do endure [it]? but if, doing good and suffering [for it], ye do endure, this [is] gracious with God, 20 For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
21 for to this ye were called, because Christ also did suffer for you, leaving to you an example, that ye may follow his steps, 21 For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
22 who did not commit sin, nor was guile found in his mouth, 22 who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”
23 who being reviled — was not reviling again, suffering — was not threatening, and was committing himself to Him who is judging righteously, 23 When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
24 who our sins himself did bear in his body, upon the tree, that to the sins having died, to the righteousness we may live; by whose stripes ye were healed, 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.
25 for ye were as sheep going astray, but ye turned back now to the shepherd and overseer of your souls. 25 For you were going astray like sheep; but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
