1 When Israel came out of Egypt, the children of Jacob from a people whose language was strange to them;
1 When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language,
2 Judah became his holy place, and Israel his kingdom.
2 Judá fué su consagrada heredad, Israel su señorío.
2 Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
3 The sea saw it, and went in flight; Jordan was turned back.
3 The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back.
4 The mountains were jumping like goats, and the little hills like lambs.
4 The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.
5 What was wrong with you, O sea, that you went in flight? O Jordan, that you were turned back?
5 ¿Qué tuviste, oh mar, que huiste? ¿y tú, oh Jordán, que te volviste atrás?
5 What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back?
6 You mountains, why were you jumping like goats, and you little hills like lambs?
6 You mountains, that you skipped like rams? You little hills, like lambs?
7 Be troubled, O earth, before the Lord, before the God of Jacob;
7 A la presencia del Señor tiembla la tierra, á la presencia del Dios de Jacob;
7 Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 Who made the rock into a water-spring, and the hard stone into a fountain.
8 who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXIII)

    When ye hear sung in the Psalms, "Praise the Lord, ye children" (ver. 1); imagine not that that exhortation pertaineth not unto you, because having already passed the youth of the body, ye are either blooming in the prime of manhood, or growing gray with the honours of old age: for unto all of you the Apostle saith, "Brethren, be …

    Since then before His appearance in flesh, the sea saw Him and fled, and Jordan was turned back, the Lord took to Himself His body, that the sea might endure the sight, and Jordan receive Him without fear.

    … instance, "The Sea said" so and so; and, "The Depth saith, It is not in me;" and "The Heavens declare the glory of God;" and again a command is given to the Sword; and the Mountains and Hills are asked the reason of their skipping. For the Scripture is familiar with the figure of personification, and is wont to speak of inanimate things as though they were animate: for example, The sea saw it and fled: Jordan was driven back.
