1 But call, if anyone will hearken to thee, Or if thou shalt see any of the holy angels.
1 “Call now; is there any who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?
2 For wrath destroys the foolish one, And envy slays him that has gone astray.
2 For resentment kills the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple.
3 And I have seen foolish ones taking root: But suddenly their habitation was devoured.
3 I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 Let their children be far from safety, And let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer.
4 His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them,
5 For what they have collected, the just shall eat; But they shall not be delivered out of calamities: Let their strength be utterly exhausted.
5 whose harvest the hungry eat up, and take it even out of the thorns. The snare gapes for their substance.
6 For labor cannot by any means come out of the earth, Nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains:
6 Porque la iniquidad no sale del polvo, ni la molestia brota de la tierra.
6 For affliction doesn’t come out of the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground;
7 Yet man is born to labor, And [even so] the vulture’s young seek the high places.
7 but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
8 Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, And will call upon the Lord, the sovereign of all;
8 Ciertamente yo buscaría á Dios, y depositaría en él mis negocios:
8 “But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God,
9 Who does great things and untraceable, Glorious things also, and marvelous, of which there is no number:
9 El cual hace cosas grandes é inescrutables, y maravillas que no tienen cuento:
9 who does great things that can’t be fathomed, marvelous things without number;
10 Who gives rain upon the earth, Sending water on the earth:
10 Que da la lluvia sobre la haz de la tierra, y envía las aguas por los campos:
10 who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields;
11 Who exalts the lowly, And raises up them that are lost:
11 Que pone los humildes en altura, y los enlutados son levantados á salud:
11 so that he sets up on high those who are low, those who mourn are exalted to safety.
12 Frustrating the counsels of the crafty, And their hands shall not perform the truth:
12 Que frustra los pensamientos de los astutos, para que sus manos no hagan nada:
12 He frustrates the plans of the crafty, so that their hands can’t perform their enterprise.
13 Who takes the wise in their wisdom, And subverts the counsel of the crafty.
13 Que prende á los sabios en la astucia de ellos, y el consejo de los perversos es entontecido;
13 He takes the wise in their own craftiness; the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.
14 In the day darkness shall come upon them, And let them grope in the noonday even as in the night:
14 De día se topan con tinieblas, y en mitad del día andan á tientas como de noche:
14 They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night.
15 And let them perish in war, And let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty.
15 Y libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos, y de la mano violenta;
15 But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty.
16 And let the weak have hope, But the mouth of the unjust be stopped.
16 So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.
17 But blessed [is] the man whom the Lord has reproved; And reject not thou the chastening of the Almighty.
17 “Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty.
18 For he causes [a man] to be in pain, and restores [him] again: He smites, and his hands heal.
18 For he wounds and binds up. He injures and his hands make whole.
19 Six times he shall deliver thee out of distresses: And in the seventh harm shall not touch thee.
19 He will deliver you in six troubles; yes, in seven no evil will touch you.
20 In famine he shall deliver thee from death: And in war he shall free thee from the power of the sword.
20 In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword.
21 He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue: And thou shalt not be afraid of coming evils.
21 You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, neither will you be afraid of destruction when it comes.
22 Thou shalt laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless: And thou shalt not be afraid of wild beasts.
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, neither will you be afraid of the animals of the earth.
23 For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
23 For you will be allied with the stones of the field. The animals of the field will be at peace with you.
24 Then shalt thou know that thy house shall be at peace, And the provision for thy tabernacle shall not fail.
24 You will know that your tent is in peace. You will visit your fold, and will miss nothing.
25 And thou shalt know that thy seed [shall be] abundant; And thy children shall be like the herbage of the field.
25 You will know also that your offspring will be great, your offspring as the grass of the earth.
26 And thou shalt come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season, Or as a heap of the corn flour collected in proper time.
26 You will come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season.
27 Behold, we have thus sought out these matters; These are what we have heard: But do thou reflect with thyself, if thou hast done anything [wrong].
27 Behold, we have researched it. It is so. Hear it, and know it for your good.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 5:13 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book IV, Chapter XIV)

    … eye on virgins, according to the prophecy of Isaiah, who said, Behold a virgin shall conceive and bare a Son and shall call His name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us,' in order that he who taketh the wise in their own craftiness may deceive him who always glorieth in his wisdom, the maiden is given in marriage …
