1 For the end, Destroy not, a Psalm of a Song for Asaph. 2 We will give thanks to thee, O God, we will give thanks, and call upon thy name: I will declare all thy wonderful works. 3 When I shall take a set time, I will judge righteously. 4 The earth is dissolved, and all that dwell in it: I have strengthened its pillars. Pause. 5 I said unto the transgressors, Do not transgress; and to the sinners, Lift not up the horn. 6 Lift not up your horn on high; speak not unrighteousness against God. 7 For [good comes] neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert mountains. 8 For God is the judge; he puts down one, and raises up another. 9 For [there is] a cup in the hand of the Lord, full of unmingled wine; and he has turned [it] from side to side, but its dregs have not been wholly poured out; all the sinners of the earth shall drink [them]. 10 But I will exult for ever: I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. 11 And I will break all the horns of sinners; but the horns of the righteous one shall be exalted.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 75.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
There are passages, however, in regard to which it is uncertain in what sense they ought to be taken, as for example, "In the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red: it is full of mixture." Now it is uncertain whether this denotes the wrath of God, but not to the last extremity of …

… to your thought, so that your curiosity in investigating the incomprehensible may not incur the reproaches of Job, and you be not asked by him, "Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened?" If ever you hear in the Psalms, "I bear up the pillars of it;" see in these pillars the power which sustains it.
