1 For the end, a Psalm of David, upon the eighth. 2 Save me, O Lord; for the godly man has failed; for truth is diminished from among the children of men. 3 Every one has spoken vanity to his neighbour: their lips are deceitful, they have spoken with a double heart. 4 Let the Lord destroy all the deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaks great words: 5 who have said, We will magnify our tongue; our lips are our own: who is Lord of us? 6 Because of the misery of the poor, and because of the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord, I will set [them] in safety; I will speak [to them] thereof openly. 7 The oracles of the Lord are pure oracles; as silver tried in the fire, proved [in] a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 8 Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us, and shalt preserve us, from this generation, and for ever. 9 The ungodly walk around: according to thy greatness thou hast greatly exalted the sons of men.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 12.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
This title does not require a fresh consideration: for the meaning of, "to the end," has already been sufficiently handled.

For the oppression of the poor, and for the sighing of the needy, will I now arise, saith the Lord: I will place him in safety; I will deal confidently with him." Chapter XVI — Christ as an example of humility For Christ is of those who are humble-minded, and not of those who exalt themselves over His flock.
"Death hath no more dominion over Him; and we ourselves after the resurrection shall be "ever with the Lord," to whom we now say, as the sacred Psalmist dictates, "Thou shall keep us, O Lord, Thou shall preserve us from this generation." And that too which follows, is, I think, appropriate enough: "The wicked walk in a circle," not because …
