1 Act now, you who are wealthy! Weep and wail in your miseries, which will soon come upon you!
1 EA ya ahora, oh ricos, llorad aullando por vuestras miserias que os vendrán.
1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.
2 Your riches have been corrupted, and your garments have been eaten by moths.
2 Vuestras riquezas están podridas: vuestras ropas están comidas de polilla.
2 Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten.
3 Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be a testimony against you, and it will eat away at your flesh like fire. You have stored up wrath for yourselves unto the last days.
3 Vuestro oro y plata están corrompidos de orín; y su orín os será en testimonio, y comerá del todo vuestras carnes como fuego. Os habéis allegado tesoro para en los postreros días.
3 Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.
4 Consider the pay of the workers who reaped your fields: it has been misappropriated by you; it cries out. And their cry has entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.
4 He aquí, el jornal de los obreros que han segado vuestras tierras, el cual por engaño no les ha sido pagado de vosotros, clama; y los clamores de los que habían segado, han entrado en los oídos del Señor de los ejércitos.
4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.
5 You have feasted upon the earth, and you have nourished your hearts with luxuries, unto the day of slaughter.
5 Habéis vivido en deleites sobre la tierra, y sido disolutos; habéis cebado vuestros corazones como en el día de sacrificios.
5 You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.
6 You led away and killed the Just One, and he did not resist you.
6 Habéis condenado [y] muerto al justo; [y] él no os resiste.
6 You have condemned and you have murdered the righteous one. He doesn’t resist you.
7 Therefore, be patient, brothers, until the advent of the Lord. Consider that the farmer anticipates the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently, until he receives the early and the late rains.
7 Pues, hermanos, tened paciencia hasta la venida del Señor. Mirad [cómo] el labrador espera el precioso fruto de la tierra, aguardando con paciencia, hasta que reciba la lluvia temprana y tardía.
7 Be patient therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receives the early and late rain.
8 Therefore, you too should be patient and should strengthen your hearts. For the advent of the Lord draws near.

8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
9 Brothers, do not complain against one another, so that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the door.
9 Hermanos, no os quejéis unos contra otros, porque no seáis condenados; he aquí, el juez está delante de la puerta.

10 My brothers, consider the Prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of departing from evil, of labor, and of patience.
10 Hermanos míos, tomad por ejemplo de aflicción y de paciencia, á los profetas que hablaron en nombre del Señor.
10 Take, brothers, for an example of suffering and of perseverance, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11 Consider that we beatify those who have endured. You have heard of the patient suffering of Job. And you have seen the end of the Lord, that the Lord is merciful and compassionate.
11 He aquí, tenemos por bienaventurados á los que sufren. Habéis oído la paciencia de Job, y habéis visto el fin del Señor, que el Señor es muy misericordioso y piadoso.
11 Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12 But before all things, my brothers, do not choose to swear, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor in any other oath. But let your word ‘Yes’ be yes, and your word ‘No’ be no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
12 Mas sobre todo, hermanos míos, no juréis, ni por el cielo, ni por la tierra, ni por otro cualquier juramento; sino vuestro sí sea sí, y vuestro no sea no; porque no caigáis en condenación.
12 But above all things, my brothers, don’t swear—not by heaven, or by the earth, or by any other oath; but let your “yes” be “yes”, and your “no”, “no”, so that you don’t fall into hypocrisy.
13 Is any of you sad? Let him pray. Is he even-tempered? Let him sing psalms.
13 ¿Está alguno entre vosotros afligido? haga oración. ¿Está alguno alegre? cante salmos.
13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises.
14 Is anyone ill among you? Let him bring in the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
14 ¿Está alguno enfermo entre vosotros? llame á los ancianos de la iglesia, y oren por él, ungiéndole con aceite en el nombre del Señor.
14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15 And a prayer of faith will save the infirm, and the Lord will alleviate him. And if he has sins, these will be forgiven him.
15 Y la oración de fe salvará al enfermo, y el Señor lo levantará; y si estuviere en pecados, le serán perdonados.
15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be saved. For the unremitting prayer of a just person prevails over many things.
16 Confesaos vuestras faltas unos á otros, y rogad los unos por los otros, para que seáis sanos; la oración del justo, obrando eficazmente, puede mucho.

17 Elijah was a mortal man like us, and in prayer he prayed that it would not rain upon the earth. And it did not rain for three years and six months.
17 Elías era hombre sujeto á semejantes pasiones que nosotros, y rogó con oración que no lloviese, y no llovió sobre la tierra en tres años y seis meses.

18 And he prayed again. And the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

19 My brothers, if anyone of you strays from the truth, and if someone converts him,

20 he ought to know that whoever causes a sinner to be converted from the error of his ways will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Let us listen to the Apostle James, who states this precept with the greatest clearness when he says, "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another." For of this also the Lord gave us the example.
