CPDV Catholic Public Domain Version
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Admonish them to be subordinate to the rulers and authorities, to obey their dictates, to be prepared for every good work,
2 to speak evil of no one, not to be litigious, but to be reserved, displaying all meekness toward all men.
3 For, in times past, we ourselves were also unwise, unbelieving, erring, servants of various desires and pleasures, acting with malice and envy, being hateful and hating one another.
4 But then the kindness and humanity of God our Savior appeared.
5 And he saved us, not by works of justice that we had done, but, in accord with his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and by the renovation of the Holy Spirit,
5 No por obras de justicia que nosotros habíamos hecho, mas por su misericordia nos salvó, por el lavacro de la regeneración, y de la renovación del Espíritu Santo;
6 whom he has poured out upon us in abundance, through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying. And I want you to confirm these things, so that those who believe in God may take care to excel in good works. These things are good and useful to men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, as well as arguments against the law. For these are useless and empty.
10 Avoid a man who is a heretic, after the first and second correction,
10 Rehusa hombre hereje, después de una y otra amonestación;
11 knowing that one who is like this has been subverted, and that he offends; for he has been condemned by his own judgment.
12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, hurry to return to me at Nicopolis. For I have decided to winter there.
12 Cuando enviare á ti á Artemas, ó á Tichîco, procura venir á mí, á Nicópolis: porque allí he determinado invernar.
13 Send Zenas the lawyer and Apollo ahead with care, and let nothing be lacking to them.
14 But let our men also learn to excel in good works pertaining to the necessities of life, so that they may not be unfruitful.
15 All those who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. May the grace of God be with you all. Amen.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Titus (Homily VI)

Having spoken of the love of God to man, of His ineffable regard for us, of what we were and what He has done for us, he has added, "These things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works"; that is, Discourse of these things, and from a …

  2. Quotes verse 3:1 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters I–VI)

Ye never grudged any act of kindness, being "ready to every good work." Adorned by a thoroughly virtuous and religious life, ye did all things in the fear of God.

  3. Quotes verse 3:10 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters XVI–XVII)

But as many as separate from the Church, and give heed to such old wives' fables as these, are truly self-condemned; and these men Paul commands us, "after a first and second admonition, to avoid." And John, the disciple of the Lord, has intensified their condemnation, when he desires us not even to address to them the salutation of "good-speed;" …

  4. Quotes verse 3:5 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapters XV–XV)

… "Now I know in part, but then shall I know, even as also I am known; and now through a glass in a riddle, but then face to face." For the same apostle also says that we have been saved by the washing of regeneration, and yet declares in another place, "We are saved by hope: but hope that is …

  5. Quotes verse 3:10 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIII)

Therefore Paul also said to Timothy, "Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words;" and again in another place, "From such turn away," and, "A man that is an heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject." It is not, you see, that those truths furnish them with armor, but they become fools in this …
