20 Глаго́лахꙋ же мно́зи ѿ ни́хъ: бѣ́са и҆́мать и҆ неи́стовъ є҆́сть: что̀ є҆гѡ̀ послꙋ́шаете;
21 И҆ні́и глаго́лахꙋ: сі́и гл҃гѡ́ли не сꙋ́ть бѣснꙋ́ющагѡсѧ: є҆да̀ мо́жетъ бѣ́съ слѣпы̑мъ ѻ҆́чи ѿве́рсти;
22 Y se hacía la fiesta de la dedicación en Jerusalem; y era invierno;
25 Respondióles Jesús: Os [lo] he dicho, y no creéis: las obras que yo hago en nombre de mi Padre, ellas dan testimonio de mí;
27 Mis ovejas oyen mi voz, y yo las conozco, y me siguen;
30 Yo y el Padre una cosa somos.
32 Ѿвѣща̀ и҆̀мъ і҆и҃съ: мнѡ́га дѡбра̀ дѣла̀ ꙗ҆ви́хъ ва́мъ ѿ ѻ҆ц҃а̀ моегѡ̀: за ко́е и҆́хъ дѣ́ло ка́менїе ме́щете на мѧ̀;
32 Respondióles Jesús: Muchas buenas obras os he mostrado de mi Padre; ¿por cuál obra de esas me apedreáis?
34 Ѿвѣща̀ и҆̀мъ і҆и҃съ: нѣ́сть ли пи́сано въ зако́нѣ ва́шемъ: а҆́зъ рѣ́хъ: бо́зи є҆стѐ;
35 Si dijo, dioses, á aquellos á los cuales fué hecha palabra de Dios (y la Escritura no puede ser quebrantada);
37 Si no hago obras de mi Padre, no me creáis.
39 Y procuraban otra vez prenderle; mas él se salió de sus manos;
42 Y muchos creyeron allí en él.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 10:14 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXXVIII)

    We have heard the Lord Jesus setting forth to us the office of a good shepherd. And herein He hath doubtless given us to know, as we may understand it, that there are good shepherds.

  2. Commentary 10:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter X — 1-10)

    Our Lord's discourse to the Jews began in connection with the man who was born blind and was restored to sight. Your Charity therefore ought to know and be advised that today's lesson is interwoven with that one.

  3. Commentary 10:14 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LX)

    A great matter, beloved, a great matter it is to preside over a Church: a matter needing wisdom and courage as great as that of which Christ speaketh, that a man should lay down his life for the sheep, and never leave them deserted or naked; that he should stand against the wolf nobly.

  4. Quotes verse 10:18 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X, Chapters XLI–XLIII)

    … loved us, for whom He, who thought it no robbery to be equal with Thee, "became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross;" He alone "free among the dead," that had power to lay down His life, and power to take it again; for us was He unto Thee both Victor and Victim, and the Victor as being …

  5. Quotes verse 10:33 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIX)

    And not here only, but also in another case again, when they were saying, "For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy, and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God," neither in that instance did He put down this opinion, but again confirmed it, saying, "If I do not the works of my Father, believe …
