PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 God having spoken in many parts and in many ways formerly to the fathers in the prophets,
1 God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
2 at the end of these days has spoken to us in [the person of the] Son, whom he has established heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
2 has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.
3 who being [the] effulgence of his glory and [the] expression of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having made [by himself] the purification of sins, set himself down on the right hand of the greatness on high,
3 His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, who, when he had by himself purified us of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high,
4 taking a place by so much better than the angels, as he inherits a name more excellent than they.
4 having become as much better than the angels as the more excellent name he has inherited is better than theirs.
5 For to which of the angels said he ever, Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him for father, and he shall be to me for son?
5 For to which of the angels did he say at any time, “You are my Son. Today I have become your father?” and again, “I will be to him a Father, and he will be to me a Son?”
5 τίνι γὰρ εἶπέ ποτε τῶν ἀγγέλων· υἱός μου εἶ σύ, ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε; καὶ πάλιν· ἐγὼ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ εἰς πατέρα, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι εἰς υἱόν;
6 and again, when he brings in the firstborn into the habitable world, he says, And let all God's angels worship him.
6 When he again brings in the firstborn into the world he says, “Let all the angels of God worship him.”
7 And as to the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire;
7 Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his servants a flame of fire.”
8 but as to the Son, Thy throne, O God, [is] to the age of the age, and a sceptre of uprightness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom.
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your Kingdom.
9 Thou hast loved righteousness and hast hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy companions.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.”
10 And, Thou in the beginning, Lord, hast founded the earth, and works of thy hands are the heavens.
10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning, laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens are the works of your hands.
11 They shall perish, but thou continuest still; and they all shall grow old as a garment,
11 They will perish, but you continue. They all will grow old like a garment does.
12 and as a covering shalt thou roll them up, and they shall be changed; but thou art the Same, and thy years shall not fail.
12 You will roll them up like a mantle, and they will be changed; but you are the same. Your years won’t fail.”
13 But as to which of the angels said he ever, Sit at my right hand until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet?
13 But which of the angels has he told at any time, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet?”
13 πρὸς τίνα δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἴρηκέ ποτε· κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου;
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out for service on account of those who shall inherit salvation?
14 Aren’t they all serving spirits, sent out to do service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
14 οὐχὶ πάντες εἰσὶ λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα εἰς διακονίαν ἀποστελλόμενα διὰ τοὺς μέλλοντας κληρονομεῖν σωτηρίαν;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily I)

    Truly, "where sin abounded, grace did much more abound." ( Rom. v. 20.) This at least the blessed Paul intimates here also, in the very beginning of his Epistle to the Hebrews.

  2. Quotes verse 1:7 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters XXXIV–XXXIX)

    … knowledge, "who, being the brightness of His majesty, is by so much greater than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." For it is thus written, "Who maketh His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire." But concerning His Son the Lord spoke thus: "Thou art my Son, to-day have I …

  3. Quotes verse 1:1 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CVIII)

    Since, "in many places, and in diverse manners," as the Epistle to the Hebrews saith, "God spoke in former times to the fathers through the Prophets;" yet He spoke of Him whom He sent afterwards, that the words of the Prophets might be fulfilled: for "all the promises of God in Him are yea." Psalm CIX

  4. Quotes verse 1:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXV)

    At least Paul puts it as a peculiar privilege of the Only-Begotten, saying, "To which of the angels said He at any time, Sit thou on my right hand? And of the angels He saith, who maketh His angels spirits; but unto the Son, Thy throne, O God.'" How then saith He, "To sit on my right hand and on …
